Story of a Putter

Here is a step by step process of how a putter goes from a clunker off of eBay to a work of art. I don't have much technical detail on it, just a step by step picture show.

Here is phase 1, before the putter went anywhere, notice the "Fabulous condition" *gags* (cool)

Notice all the dings on the putter, and the for lack of a better word, crappy condition it is in.

The first step in the process was to send the putter to an engraver, and have what I need engraved, engraved. Here are pictures of the engraving on the front and back (my initials and CMU 2009):

Now that they engraving is done, the finish is stripped off, and it is in a raw finish (which I used for the Cameron contest):

Next they put the black finish on, and this is where the putter really starts to take shape:

The final step is the paintfill, and sending it back to my waiting hands :golfer: :D:

Thanks for looking everyone, let me know what you think, and I had a question about caring for the putter. I have all the supplies I think I need, WD-40, and the Scotty Cameron Oil Rag (I got it cheap, lol). I was just wondering what I should do after each hole and each round, to keep it pristine.

Carnegie Mellon - I get that one a lot.

Good school. High suicide rate. :golfer:

Do you know how much weight you lost in the head? I'd be very impressed if he was able to keep the loss under 10 grams. Either way, you'll have a perdy putter in your hands soon enough. Good move on the black oxide too. Platinum's a dime a dozen (higher prices can be fetched on ebay though).

When I picked it out, I wasn't thinking about reselling rates. I knew I liked the way it felt, bad shape it was in and all, and I wanted to make it:

1) In great shape to be my gamer.

2) To be a putter that was my own - and cheaper than a 009 or Slighter :-D.

It ended up costing 175 for the putter and the work done on it, so I think that is a really good deal. Head weight was measured to be 335 grams, not sure what it was after the refinishing. Probably around 330, and since I was playing cheapo putters before this, it feels plenty hefty.

And yeah, I know about CMU's suicide rate, you know how a lot of places people brag about how much they drank? Here it is all about the number of all nighters doing work, or who got the least sleep the past week. It is :golfer: .

And did Central Michigan get here before Carnegie Mellon? There are a few more that annoy me too while I'm on the subject. Since I'm fron the West Coast:

USC is Southern California - not South Carolina.

USF is San Fransisco - not Southern Frlorida.

Actually Central Michigan did get here before Carnegie Mellon!!! I googled it to see and I was surprised to find out that you guys did copy us. :golfer: Carnegie Mellon University, at Pittsburgh, Pa.; est. 1967 through the merger of the Carnegie Institute of Technology (founded 1900, opened 1905) and the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research (founded 1913). On the other hand, Central Michigan Normal School was founded in downtown Mount Pleasant on Sept. 13, 1892, as a small college committed to training teachers and business professionals.

All in good fun but thanks for adding some Central colors to your putter....way to represent!! (cool)

Here are some things that you could do:

A friend of mine who actually knows Scotty personally said he recommends using a sillicon spray and then wiping with the oil cloth. That's what I do with my Circa #3 and it looks beautiful after every use.

I've also heard that sillicon spray is the way to go with those types of finishes. Someone at the cameroncollector.com forums suggested spraying your putter heavily with sillicon before the round. This will keep debris from attaching to the putter, as well as leaving some sillicon in your head cover when you cover your putter.

Got it form another tpic on this site. Although Circa's have gun blue finishes, they do have the characterists as far as rusting and care for them.

I also found this on Scotty's site:

The unique feel of Scotty Cameron by Titleist putters results from the use of milled carbon steel heads. This material is susceptible to oxidation and rusting if left damp. To preserve the natural finish of your putter you are urged to follow a few simple guidelines:

- Always dry your putter at the end of the day with the soft silicone cloth supplied.

- We suggest storing the cloth in your cover during the round and even wiping down the putter a few times during the round.

- Always use a dry headcover.

- Never leave you putter in damp or cold atmospheres.

The Gun Blue, Oil Can and Teryllium series putters are most susceptible so please follow these guidelines carefully. The Pro Platinum finish is more durable because there is a plating between the soft carbon steel and the elements but care should be taken to avoid dings, which can rust. The 1996 Copper rack featured 7 putters made from soft carbon steel and plated with copper. These putters are intended to oxidize into a rich patina but should still be maintained with your oil cloth. We suggest following the above guidelines to ensure that the beautiful finish of your Scotty Cameron putter can be preserved indefinitely.

Thanks for the posts Jer-Jer, very helpful.

What I am doing right now is spraying a paper towel (need to upgrade that) with WD-40, wiping it off, and then wiping it down with Scotty's Oil Rag. Haven't given it a chance to play out side, but, so far that is working. Anything I should use other than a paper towel? I heard an old headcover works well for when I'm not playing, to spray with oil.
