Best <$100 Driver for a Beginner

New or Used

One of my friends is starting to pick up golf. He wants to spend about 100 or less on a driver and is looking for max forgiveness. Any suggestions out there? New or used.

new - nothing out there outside of a sports authority special or a Hippo, the Hammer, Northwestern plus 10, etc...

 

Used - not much more, might have to go Callaway preowned or the used bin at your local golf store. For that amount, you are looking for Titleist 975J or 975J-VS, Nike 400, taylormade r510 or 300 series, Cleveland Launcher 330, etc...

 

You are looking at 3 to 4 yr old tech at best. Still will be .83 COR, but due to head size, not overly forgiving...

I'd look at a well used Nike Ignite 460. You should be able to get one for around a $100 or so, I think, on ebay.

you can get a brand new knockoff driver for 100ish but it's hit and miss with quality... ebay would probably your best bet

Yeah, for a beginner, stock shafts are fine, so any driver can be had a little cheaper. You can always find some good stuff on eBay, but if you are going for new, you will probably have to go about 2 generations earlier. Maybe the NDS could be had.

Taylor Made R580 or R580 XD, you could even go with the R360. Any of these drivers would be very good as well as very reasonable in price, and their stock shafts are good too. Have fun on the hunt for your driver. :golfer:

 

p.s. Just remembered another dandy, R420 was a damn good one also.

New = A few months ago you could find brand new Nicklaus Airmax 440ML drivers brand new on EBAY for right around $100.00. Don't know if there are any new ones left out there but that price is an absolute steal. The 440 ML is a great driver. The TM 580XD can be had new for a bit more than $100.00 if you watch closely. I saw a couple of new Bridgestone 420 cc drivers go for just over $100 recently. You should also still be able to find new Cleveland Launcher 400cc drivers for $99.99.

 

Used (also EBAY) = I've seen some good condition Nike Ignite 460's go for slightly more than $100 lately and the Ignite 410's go for slightly less, you also might be able to find a used but nice condition Cobra 460 SZ in the $100 range.

As far as knockoffs go, I would look to www.golfideas.com. I have purchased several items from them, and I actually just sold my Hogan irons for a set of forged pro combo knockoffs from there. Good quality at a great price

golfideas is good but i prefer www.diamondtour.com they use the same clubs but diamondtour is cheaper. Also diamondtour is in illinois as am I so they ship in no time. They truly are quality clubs at a great price. I have henry hatton blades as my backup iron set and they are awesome, best blades ive ever played. Their drivers are good too..i have a ignite 410 clone w/ steel shaft and this thing ownz..they seriously are great if u want the latest technology at an affordable price.

Adams old model, Adams rpm 460, is in the price range.

You can easily score a new on ebay less 100 bucks.

An original Adams Redline would work. It's 460cc, .83COR and can be had for under $100 easy.

I will second (or third :golfer:) TaylorMade R580XD. It's still one of the best TaylorMade drivers. Some people still swear by it.

You can get a Cleveland Launcher 400 for that price on Ebay, I checked the

completed listings you should be able to find one with an upgraded shaft.

 

These are 3 years old but still very good.

Adams Redline has .83 COR, 460cc, and under $100. I have a friend with a Blue in it and he hits it so much further than me it's not funny :golfer:

This nailed the same two I was thinking about. I would lean towards the Nicklaus only because I have one myself and love the sound of it when it's hit well. The 580 sounds a little dull to me but are good deals as well.

Everyone has thrown out tremendous buys and all are good too. This got me thinking, how many on these sites complain about the various OEM's coming out with newer products before the paint is dried on the ones they've just bought. I'd bet a guy with a very low budget for golf could put together one hell of a bag for $500 or less. I don't mean a mixmatched bag but a gamers bag that many a playa would use. (cool)

 

Maybe someone ought to start a topic on cheapest players bag, top to bottom. :golfer:
