What does it mean?

I see on tour heads for sale the term "Hot Melt" Can someone tell me what this means and what it does?

Its an epoxy with some weight added like tungsten powder. It can "quiet" the head and adds weight. It can be done to most woods and drivers.

How do they keep the " hot mixture " from breaking loose and rattleling around in the head?? Foam?? Is that one of the idots from Bombsquad selling some crap again?? Jim

Hey joe i read on here that someone was going to apply it to the head in a couple different spots namely the top and sole of the head. Was wondering how they apply it to different spots if its suppose to be applied to the inside of the club. Thanks

I've seen this term used a few different ways, and for a few different reasons.

 

The first use describes a thermoplastic rubber that's incredibly sticky, but pretty firm and solid at room temperature. You have to heat it up, via a heat plate/beaker or using a heated injection device (very similar to a "hot glue stick" setup) to make it liquid. The liquid is injected into the head through the hosel or through a hole drilled in the sole (this is the way one of the repair vans on the Nationwide tour did a Kasco/VS Tour head I had).

 

Most of the time, it's to increase the weight of the head for swingweight. The thermoplastic rubber also has a very noticable vibration absorption property when you use more than just few grams of it.

I actually like the solid, muted feel that it gives a driver, so I hot melt most of the drivers I've had.

 

The other way I've seen heads weighted for swingweight is by mixing tungsten and regular shafting epoxy, then injecting that into the head. It's a bit less messy, but the inside of the head has to be clean and dry to get the stuff to stick permanently. I rinse out the head with a little alcohol before doing this if I can.

 

The hot melt doesn't run the risk of coming loose, but I've heard of a few types that will "flow" if you leave your clubs in the trunk of a hot car. If you put the hot melt evenly on the sole, on a very hot day it can flow a bit, for example down to the toe if the club is "toe down" in the bag in the car.

 

The stuff I use is pretty firm right up to the point where it liquifies with heat. I think it's in the 150 to 170 degree range...pretty hot.

 

With the R7 series, I only do it for feel now, so I don't really worry about the flowing anymore, but I've put 8 grams or so of the stuff in a few older TM heads.

 

It really isn't that much weight. If it all flowed to the heel or toe, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

 

The epoxy/tungsten method is more permanent. The hot melt can be reheated and drained if you really had to do it.

 

Just a brief warning though. The stuff is really messy and sticky!

Is this hot melt you would or could use in the cavity of a putter to add weight or should I just stick with some lead tape on the bottom of the putter?

you could mix epoxy and tungsten powder to fill cavity, but its gonna be a bitc* to get out if you want to remove it
