Scotty Cameron on Tiger Woods

tighten up your dot game, scotty!
"I custom make 3-4 putters a year for Tiger. He wants backups. They're almost identical, but because I make them by hand, they aren't exact duplicates. Tiger likes a little dot on top of the putter, which I insert with a drill bit and then fill with paint. One day I get a call from Tiger. He says one of the dots on one of the putters is bigger than the others. I check them, and sure enough he's right--it was too big by almost an immeasureable margin, about the thickness of a piece of paper. It so happens that every drill bit wobbles imperceptibly. I haven't made a putter for him since without that little dot on my mind."

ya it was in the jan 06 issue of golf digest.

here's another one from scotty:

"I've heard the notion that there's too much weight given to putting, that is accounts for too many of the strokes in a round of golf. Gene Sarazen tried enlarging the hole one time, and someone even suggested that a putt count as only half a stroke. But count me with those who think the balance is just right. It's working well for me."

Scotty has been telling that story for years. Here is the link pointing to the article and audio interview as well.

People at Tiger's level in any given profession amaze me. It's that natural ability that sets them apart from the rest. It reminds me of when I was in the music industry, there was a guitarist named Eric Johnson. His ear was so good he could tell if someone put a different brand of battery in his effect pedals. Gotta admire people like that.

If Azinger's driver was 1/8 inches shorter that would make a standard, 45 inch, driver 39.375 inches long, I think I would notice that as well. That's almost like swinging a seven iron.

LOL no he means its 1/8th of an inch shorter in other words 44 and 7/8ths rather than 45 or whatever his driver length was

Man, Tiger is such a perfectionist.

When Nike made a several drivers for him and after few swings he said one of his driver was heavier than others and sure enough that driver was about two cotton balls heavier.

This guy is unbelievable.

Yeah Nike loves to talk their guy up that is for sure. Yes he is an amazing player but I don't care how perfect he is, it is impossible to tell the difference in weight with something by two cotton balls. Nobody on the face of this earth could do that unless it is a lucky guess!

Hes been playin golf longer than ive been alive and has had the same set makeup for the past 20 years if you used the same stuff done in the same way for 20 years when someone comes along and changes it youd know it to hes probably hit millions of balls so a little weight or some tape or whatever would make a big change. I think its funny how people who work in the golf industry are mystified how the tour players are so precise about there stuff. Not leaving things to chance is pretty much what sets golf apart from most any other sport. While most other sports require some luck and some skill golf is pretty much 98 percent skill and thats why i love it. If you lose its your fault for not playing as good as the other guy. Not your teammates fault for missing a field goal with 3 seconds to play. Thats why these guys are so precise about their equipment they play what they know will work and what they have played for years, slight to alot of times heavily modified "new" gear. Not saying you guys dont feel the same way just sayin they are not superhuman or anything like that. You pretty much have to be a perfectionist to play golf at that level. I once read an article about Jerry seinfeld that said one of the guys that worked with him would every now and then move something on his desk just slightly and he would come in and notice something was wrong immediately. Repetitions is why. Same thing over and over and over again and you would notice changes too.

Paul Azinger noticed his driver was 1/8th shorter than normal when a tour van guy gave him the driver...the tour van guy did not think Paul would notice, and was shocked when he did

Most good amateurs could tell if their driver was shorter...if my 3 wood isn't at 42.5" exactly (within .01"), I can't hit it as well.

I read one article where Tiger got his driver re-griped and notice they grip was wider because the used one 1 extra rap of tape.

This as well. This is why I even regrip new clubs, because the tape they use is usually thinner than the stuff I use, even though I only use 1 strip.
