Jumper lies

Some time ago, I was playing my regular course and mt drive got a bit left and finished in the 1st cut of rough. I gave the lie a glance and did not notice anything. The second shot on this hole is steeply down hill. I was about 165 out and picked an 8 iron...that ball may still be flying. It went at least 4 iron distance. I normally notice a jumper lie when I see it, but this one surprised me and traveled much further than any other flyer I have ever seen...anybody else ever get the super jumper?

I hit a 6 iron 220 metres (240 yards) into the wind one day. Massive jumper - absolutely ridiculous. You certainly can't play for that. Just got to wear it.

How do you distinguish or notice that the lie will produce a jumper?

Usually you can see if a blade or two of the grass are going to be betwen the clubface and the ball at impact...likely a flyer lie, if the grass is growing in the direction of the shot almost certain flyer...My experience YMMV

Just to clarify...so if there IS a blade or two of grass between the ball and the clubface it might be a flyer?

Been there before with fliers. Just too bad I can't have a flier with my 3 and 4 irons all the time. It would be nice to be able to hit a 230 4 iron. :)

i was playing in georgia last winter and the gress was still dormant. i hit a solid drive on a longer par 5 probably about 560- 580 yard dogleg anyway i had about 245 yards left and at that point i still carried a 2 iron (ping s59) and i thought since the ball is sitting up i could probably knock it close to the front (sry guys im not a gorilla like alot of you) and i proceeded with solid contact to put the ball 30 yards over the green i thought it was pretty cool to hit a 275 yard 2 iron but still it was deffinatly a flyer
