Reshafting my TM R580XD

Hey everybody, I'm looking to reshaft my 580XD in an attempt to achieve a better ball flight. Currently I'm playing the 580XD 10.5* with the stock TM MAS2 graphite shaft in a stiff flex. I love the club, but for one reason or another my ball flight is very low and I often hit quite a few worm burners. I'd like to hit the ball on a "better" trajectory so I can work the ball more often. With my current situation I dont hit the ball high enough to work a draw or a fade and it is hurting my game somewhat.

Heres some info on my swing:

TM R580XD 10.5* w/ stock TM MAS2 shaft, Stiff Flex

Average rounds between 75 and 80 (Being a student, I can't justify a HDCP just yet)

High swing speed, quick tempo.. no exact numbers unfortunately.

I did hit the ball at a launch monitor, but I dont think the operator really knew the #'s I was looking for. My average ball speed was 155mph with a high of 162mph.

Anyone had a similar problem? Would I be better off finding a reputable shop and getting some numbers on my swing before making any decisions?

Thanks in advance.

hmmm...from what info you have...it sounds like you're overpowering the shaft...the shaft is lagging behind, not releasing, and the head is delofted at impact...i'd probably try the grafalloy pro launch shaft or the new fujikura e370 shaft...both launch the ball at a fairly high launch angle and relatively low spin...but check with your fitter and see if you can find out if the face is delofted at impact or shut at impact...also knowing your swingspeed, launch angle, and spin rates would be highly helpful...

580 is one of taylormade best drivers even with today's standard.

I think reshaft is the right thing to do because this stock shaft is not up to your speed anymore. I would guess that your speed should be around 105-110mph.

check you swing if you catch the ball on the downward swing or upward swing. you might have to adjust a little.

try these

graffaloy comp NT R flex or S flex (R flex is already a lot stiffer than your stock shaft flex S)

grahite design YS 6+ (This one you need S flex)

aldila NVS 65 R or S (R flex is already a lot stiffer than your stock shaft flex S)

these 2 shafts are a little heavier than stock shafts, it will make better impact but it will slow your swing down a little. But good shafts will make up for the control and distance. I'm sure your club will transform into an excellent driver.

the weight of the shaft will reduce your speed unfortunately, but with your speed, it won't effect much. But better shafts will make up for the distance, sometimes over 25 yards on a driver! especially over the TM 580 stock shafts, you can gain that much!

The better shafts allow you to control the ball better. if you over power a shaft, the ball usually balloon and loss distance. Premium shafts allow more speed of the club head and keep the club head from bending away at impact, thus create less unwanted spin.

Find out a good club fitter in your area, I'm sure you will love your club with new shafts. Word of advice; don't get addicted to shaft changing habbit, it's very addictive and costly... lol.

If they have the shaft for demo, try it out because every shafts feel different. You may like the feeling of this shaft while another like that shaft, it's very personal.

Thing to look for when you change a shaft. Make sure to measure the lenght of your stock shaft and also measure the swing weight and the total weight of your driver.

If you are familiar with your club and like the feel, tell the club fitter to make your club closest to the original feel as possible. But if the shafts that you like will work best with swing weight D2 or over, you will need D2 eventhough the stock TM is usually D0-D1. Your club fitter can play with the weight of the grip, some grip are lighter than the other. Such as Golf pride tour velvet light with blue butt 39 grams, while the red butt is around 48 grams. The grip is usually the key to make total weight and swing weight fit your liking.

Well I went to GG yesterday and I was amazed with what I found out. After warming up a bit I finally settled into what felt like my normal swing and hopped onto the launch monitor. One swing and the pro helping me instantly knew what my problem was: my weight shift. I was definetly overpowering the shaft he said, but before checking out any shafts I should work on my weight transfer because I was literally hitting the club face flat at impact. My SS was averaging 110, but my avg launch angle with the TM 580 and stock shaft was 4.8 degrees! I had never actually seen myself swing the club before, so I was really amazed by seeing how my club impacted the ball.

The pro let me hit a G5 ping with a Graffaloy ProLaunch in it. I really liked the shaft, and it go my launch angle up to about 10*, but I wasnt too thrilled with the noise from the G5.

I've always had what I felt was a steep swing. I strike my irons really well, but I guess I need to tweak my swing for the tee-ball. The pro seemed to agree that my swing was well suited for irons, but I needed to keep my head still. Of course while I was there I had to try out some irons and I think I've got a set of Mizunos in my future. I hit the MX-32s and I was in love with the scoring irons as well as the mid irons. Unfortunately my girlfriend felt I was spending too much time in the store and she dragged me to bed bath and beyond. lol.

Anyway, long story short, thanks to the guys at Golf Galaxy in Robinson Mall outside of Pittsburgh for great tips and great customer service! :)

I had the complete opposite problem that you are having with the exact same club (to include shaft)with just a slightly reduced ball speed 148-153...I was launching way too high (18', and over 4000 spin rate)...I actually finally got into a R7 TP 9.5' and just installed a Graffaloy Blue X-stiff and my launch conditions are extremely better...below 3000 at about 14'. Now I'm not losing the distance into the wind that I was 2 weeks ago...

I was looking at the R5 and R7 while I was waiting to get on the launch monitor. I really liked the way they felt, but I didnt get a chance to hit either of them. Plus they're a bit out of my price range at the moment, unless I snag a used one. I thought about trying an X-stiff shaft, but I dont know how well that would go over. My last driver was a Callaway BB Steelhead 10* with a steel shaft. I had no problems launching that thing, I just ended up using it so much the face eventually "collapsed" and stopped compressing the ball.

Guess its back to the range to work on my swing, like my dad tells me constantly: "It aint the club, it's the clubee." :)
