Your top 3 driver shafts

List the best along with the dogz
For alot of guys in the biz, the biz part is really just a means to satiate their uncontrollable desire to ho and try new clubs. I'm always been a dirty boy for golf shafts as the two or three hunnert shafts strewn about my abode demonstrates.

In no particular order, I've tried the following midrange to premium shafts:
Fuji 757, 652, Pro 95, SIX
Fuji Tour Plat 26.3/27.3
Fuji 693TR, 660, 659
Accra T50/60/70, SC65/75, HF 335, HF 370
Aldila NV65/75, NVS65/75 (are these even premium anymore? They still cost me over a hunnert bucks!)
MCC MFS65/75
Penley ETA65/ETA75
GD YS6/YS7/Purple Ice/9.1/9.0
Accuflex Icon, Icon V2, VS339, AssII, Evolution
Grafalloy PooLaunch (ugh), Comp NT 85

There's more but whatever. Whereas I was a big fan of stout tip stiff shafts, now I've gravitated towards medium firm tip responsive shafts with medium torque ratings. Slow tempo 105-109mph.

My top 3 favorites thus far:
1) Accra SC65 - Smooth yet dense feeling. Feels and measures a bit soft but accepts a hard swing with adeptness and composure. Not particularly hook prone even on the most gorillaragefilledjustshotatriplemaxgrunt swings. I know I tried it last round. LOL Thing felt like it almost bent in half but all I got was a penetrating (slightly smothered) baby draw up the left side fairway.
2) Fuji Vista Tour 70 - Very tip stiff with a soft butt to compensate. Cool chrome paint that has garnered many a desirous look from the local mature korean ladies with Honma bags. Alittle torquey which give it enough feel for even my slower tempo. Hits lasers...strictly point and shoot.
3) Accra Tour 70 - A tweener between 1 and 2. Just an excellent all around shaft with silky feel and excellent control. The SC is a little better on hooks but the Tour 70 is a nice shaft to play day in/day out for the smoother swinger with a bit of aggression.

Both Accras are regular flex tipped to flatten out the ballflight a bit.

Biggest disappointments were the 757 and 660TR. I hooked the hell out of the 757 on good swings....on the same good swings it also went dead on line. 757 doesn't need more torque so the 660 reason to be is moot.

All JMHO. Be cool to see what others like.

I have had the following in my drivers or fairways at some stage:

Fujikura

757

569

553

Vista Tour 70

Vista Tour 60

Tour Platform 27.3

SIX

Mitsubishi Rayon

Diamana 83

Diamana 83 IP

XMKL-2

Graphite Design

D-03

Purple Ice

AccuFLEX

Icon v.2

Assassin II

Pro LD

Icon v.3

Series 200

Grafalloy

Blue Tour 90

Prolite 35

Prolite 45

My three favourites have been:

Diamana 83

XMKL-2 (I have a very heavy driver head on this one to soften it up)

D-03

This is strange given that these are all pretty heavy and tip stiff shafts and I don't tend to load the shafts very much. SS is 100-105 and the transition is not too aggressive.

I have had so many shafts in my fairways and driver, I cant remember them all!

My top 3:

1, Speeder 757 stiff (perfect in driver, not so great in fairways)

2, Grafalloy Prolaunch 75

3, True Temper Ei 70 II - great high launch snappy shaft, a blast to play

Worst shaft ever for me:

Aldila NV - just couldnt get it to work at any weight in any flex with any club. Zero feel for me.

This list comes to mind, I"m ONLY listing the top3 shafts I've owned or demoed...........

BEST:

Diamana "Red Board" - this shaft just felt like $$$$$ to me, but too expen$ive.

Fujikura Speeder 553 or 569 - I love these as well, a tight, accurate, precise feeling shaft.

Accra T60 - I play this now, and love this shaft. A great smooth feeling shaft with excellent control.

WORST:

Grafalloy Blue - Gosh, what a pig. I hated this shaft.

Cleveland OEM "Goldie" -that first Cleveland OEM gold colored shaft was the worst POS I've ever hit. Anybody out there with one needs to change it asap. The spining is awful, feeling and flex simply is terrible.

Fujikura Fit On! - God, this shaft was a disaster for me. I don't have the swingspeed for it, I suppose.

And others I have thoughts on:

Aldla NV - I've had this shaft in various driver heads. I still like it, but I've made a change to smoother feeling shafts like the Accras.

UST V2 - I really want to try this one. My curiosity is almost causing me to HO one just to try it out.

GD YS-6 or "YS Power" - Many people overpower this shaft, but it ALWAYS performs for me, no matter what clubhead I put it in.

Graffalloy ProLaunch - Again, many people 'dis this shaft, but I like the feeling and performance, and "kick" it delivers.

Ozik - the Internet buzz is tremendous. I'd love to try it, but it's way too $$$$$.

Some excellent choices by everyone.! :)

I will shamefully admit that among OEM shafts that I thought the newer Mizuno Exsar in the MP001 4w was really good. Older Exsars could barely be called golf shafts but this new one really was a very good shaft.

Among the newer shafts, I would love to try the Aldila By You and all the Diamanas. For now the SC65 is everything I need in a shaft = great responsive feel, not hook prone, takes a hard swing.

Seriously...your want to try list could net you a pretty nice used car! Now that I think about it, the MFS65 might be considered a more budget version of the SC65. Similar responsiveness but alittle deader in feel. I had trouble turning it over at the time....this is about 4 years ago though. I have gained mad powah since then :ok:

I know I'll never hit all of them, but I will shortly be visiting a fellow forum member to have an Accra put into my Comp and an Accuflex into an SMT head. I love reading reviews by fellows with so much experience with a ton of different shafts, your comment on the MFS65 moved that one up my list. Smoove shafts?

That's a tough one because it's so subjective.

In no particular order and off the top of my head:

Accra T60/70 and SC65/75.....we'll count those as 2. I play the SC75 in my 3w and it has a very nice sense of fluidity and tautly controlled kick. Sounds kind of porno like but hey, it's an orgasmic shaft. The Tour series have alittle more torque so feel alittle softer.

Fujikura Speeder 693TR. When timed right, this one is smoove like Prince in Purple Rain. Honorable mention to 652ex and 660TR.

Graphite Design Purple Ice. I happen to still like this shaft though it's a few years old. Great stability and responsiveness.....really paved the road for low torque/soft tip shafts that are so common today.

Here's an unknown, Innovative Comp Tour MD. They used a compression curing technique with high quality fiber to produce one of the most luxurious feeling shafts ever. They are not the same company having been bought out by a component house in IN but the shafts they made were fabulous and just as good as anythnig produced today.

Aldila NVS 75....I like this one but only if tipped otherwise it's sloppy like a fat kid on a fully loaded foot long.

Accuflex Assassin II.....I think Jody hates me calling it the AssII but whatever. Filament wounds tend to feel pretty dense and dead compared to sheet wrap but this one is nice. Honorable to VS339 and Icon (not V2).

I'd mention Diamana and other tour Fuji's but i'm waiting for a care package of MrParrano1ds' castoffs :)

Dyno,

Thanks for this info as it is very helpful. Please give your opnion on how a tipped R shaft would play vs an S per your comments on the ACCRA T70 and the SC65. Thanks.

That's a loaded question.....highly dependent on shaft and it's bend profile.

One rule of clubmaking that usually holds true is that you cannot tip R flex to S flex without altering (usually negatively) the feel characteristics. The softest portion of the shaft is always the tip with the stiffest, of course, the large diameter butt. All tipping does is remove the softest portion of the shaft so that more of the fat/stiff part of the shaft is in play. So tipping R to S is far from emulating a normal S. R and S flex in the same model typically have similar parallel tip sections.....a tipped R to S will have 1 or 2 inches lopped off. PTS is one of the things that give shafts responsiveness and feel. Add in the interesting flex profiles available today...anything goes when you tip a shaft.

In summary, basically a tipped R cut to the same butt freq as an untipped S will feel more 'one piece' and stiffer with a lower ballflight. The SC65 accepts customization very well though it's difficult to pinpoint the exact reason why...it just does. With another shaft such as GD Purple Ice which has a very stiff butt but soft tip...alittle tipping dramatically transforms that normally sweet feeling shaft into a harsh boardy tomato stake.

For me, I do like a bit of a firm flex shaft with a slightly stiffer tip so a tipped R in a softer tip shaft is about perfect with the models I've chosen. It was all done by trial and error rather than trying to hit a frequency target....the whole freq thing is vastly overrated and 98% of the time, totally misunderstood.

Sorry for rambling.... :)
