54* is as low lofted as they are going to go. any less loft (52*, 50* and 48*) and you will create too much spin. the 52*, 50*, and 48* are gap and pitching wedge lofts, clubs that you would typically use for full shots.

Which would explain why there are sub 54 loft spin mills on tour for pros who generate a s#*t load of spin anyway.

I think your average amateur would benefit from 48 to 54 spin mills being available, the existance of -54 SM Vokeys on tour tell you that

this logic is flawed, the Tour Pros want and get them!

its not my logic, but that of two different titliest reps i asked about this.

if you disagree with it, then why stop at the wedges, why not get spin milled irons?

I agree with golernut78 on this one. I don't think we'll be seeing any stronger lofted spin milleds at least until next year, if at all.

Yes, tour pros get 52* spin milleds, but they get hardly any play. In fact, even the 54 and 56*'s are seeing less and less play on tour since that's a common full swing loft. The reason you see so many spin milled 60's is because they produce lots of spin on short shots around the green which means a lot when you play on greens that are never slower than an 11 on the stimp meter.

Tour pros have access to EVERYTHING golf related. However, just because they do, doesn't mean they always use it. Rember Hydra putters? They had a full staff bag and rep out on Tour ever day, did one ever see any play?

If you're really having trouble with your gap wedge, you could bend a SM54.10 2* strong to 52.08.

Yes, I would like a set and yes, I disagree with the Titleist line, in my opinion the general public could do with more help stopping the ball with 7-PW.... :golfer:

From a club construction standpoint, it makes perfect sense. You don't want excessive spin from irons. All that's going to do is create shots that baloon and go nowhere. It doesn't matter what kind of grooves you give the average 30 handicap, without a proper downard blow and proper compression of the golf ball you won't get the kind of spin I think you're looking for out of them.

BTW, it'd also be a little difficult on golf balls, having to change them out every hole.

Okay, so Karsten was smoking too much dope for 25 years and all those millions of eye 2's with tightly packed square grooves didn't make it into peoples bags coz they ballooned.. yep, sorry, silly me!

Tightly packed square grooves are not the same as full box grooves. However, since you're so adamant about getting so much spin from your clubs, I'll help you get this done.

Give Nomad Golf WRX a call, the'll machine square grooves (the same as spn milled) into your irons for $15 a head.

Enjoy!

Karstens research found that radiusing the grooves didn't affect the spin RPMs at all, but increase the

ball durability hence why the ping grooves were radiused.

Tighter packed grooves within the one in three rule are more effective the softer the ball cover gets than than a full box groove, I know this for a fact in that I had a BeCu wedge with similar Ping groove spacing, razor sharp edges that spinwise blew away the SM's and wedges of today

Why would a company want to produce a set of clubs to spin the ball back even more, when the vast majority of the golfing public does not pull enough club to get the ball to the hole anyways. I cannot understand the logic behind your argument

Titleist doesn't make equipment for the general public. They make equipment for first and foremost for the Tour, second for the best Am's in the world, and fianlly single digit handicaps. Their R&D is driven by the Tour not the 40 lb overweight guy at the club that can't hit the ball out of his own shadow, that is what Cobra is for. Would you expect Taylor Made to release a set of TP clubs that were for hacks?? No that would defeat the purpose. That is what they have the RCB or G (I forget) and OS lines for. As far as the spin milled thing goes I agree with Taylor Made Fan. They may not "balloon," but the ball will travel a shorter distance with that much spin. This has been validated on the tour. No Tour player that I'm aware of carries any SM below 54*. With that said, one or two might depending on whether the conditions were really wet.
