scooping problem

Recommended Posts

While checking the lie on my irons this week, I've notice that I am scooping the ball during impact (I see the mark on the lie tape in the middle of the sole, not the front edge). I am losing distance and consistancy due to scooping. How do I fix it? Should I buy the swing glove? (the glove that restricts your wrist so you can't scoop up) or are there any good drills I can do without buying an impact bag or any training aids? I do have the path pro training aid, can I use that to help correctly my problem? any drills would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. :golfer:

I had the exact same problem for a little while. I found I was hitting my irons and wedges higher and weaker and I lost a lot of distance and couldnt figure out why it was happening. One day I was hitting balls before practice and my college teammate noticed that at address my hands were behind the ball. So simply enough I moved my hands a head of the ball at address. Ever since then my ball flight is much better, my ball striking is amazing, and I gained the distance back that I had lost.

Just something to try, it worked for me. Look at pretty much any tour pro at address and you'll see that they have their hands forward at address and just swing keeping that wrist angle.

Hope it helps.

You can practice hitting alot of punches, and pitches. Try to hit them as low as you can with a flat , or bowed left wrist at impact.

Change your idea of what the club does at impact. People who scoop imagine that the club slips under the ball. It doesn't. In a good swing the club comes down onto the ball and strikes the turf after the call is struck. The left wrist is flat and the right wrist bent back on itself. Weight at impact is moving to the left in a right handed swing and finishes almost entirely on the left foot.

Most of what I have described will occur naturally if you visualize strinking a downward blose, ball first, then divot.

Normally the reason for "scooping" is too weak a grip and/or the club/arms attacking from too far inside......you HAVE to "scoop" to square the face.........make sure your grip is strong enough for YOU to ALLOW the face to square instead of FORCING it to square up.......just crank er' over and hit some short shots......start off strong and then weaken it till you can hit the ball solidly and straight with NO manipulation with the hands/arms......then you will have found the correct strength of grip for YOU! :)

Thanks for the replies.

Last night, I tried to rotate my waist faster on the down swing and letting the body, arms, and hands just follow and it seems to work as it looked like my shots were going slightly futher with more consistancy, but I am not sure if this fixed it since I didn't video it. Could rotating the waist faster possibily solve the problem?

slicefixer, you said the problem could arises from "attacking from too far inside" can you try to explain that a little more? how would I know if my hands are coming from too far inside? what type of trajectory would this create? My miss hits usually end up being a pull or a fade, which I think is caused by out-to-in swing or casting (right?)

Don't know wether this would work for full shots, but a drill you can do with pitches to avoid scooping that can help your full swing is to get a piece of dowel or some sort of stick and grip it along with your club. Grip your club normally and have the stick inside your grip aswell, but the dowel will extend the butt end of your club, kind of making it longer, so the dowel sticks out the left side of your body. Now have a few hits, everything before impact should be fine, but after impact the stick won't allow the clubhead to get ahead of your hands, it will hit you in the side. This will give you the feeling of keeping your hands ahead of the clubhead and not scooping.
