Question regarding Iron shafting and swingweight

What do you think??
I have a set of irons that I am going to put shafts in myself for my nephew. I am wondering if it is ok to buy a set of True Temper Dynamic Gold SL shafts all one length and I will cut them to the exact length that I need or do I really need to try to order the lengths pretty close? How much cutting off will effect the flex? Im not sure what I need to do to make a consistant flex thru the set but I want to me able to make the length after I get them. Is tipping or anything like that necessary with these shafts at all?

Also, can anyone tell me how much difference swing weight really makes? Should a certain golfer be better off with a certain swing weight? I have used an old time clubsmith for the past several years but have recently begun to do most of my own work. The clubsmith that I used never checked swingweight on anything. ever. He tells me that as long as the club feels ok to the golfer then swing weight should not be an issue. Opinions on that? I have never really given swing weight much thought because of his opinions. I really wonder about that though. Thanks for any info and opinions.

oooh...the good old is swingweight that important question...i personally dont think that swingweight is that big of an issue but i do prefer my clubs to have a consitent balance...my irons have weighed from anywhere from d1 to d6 and it felt the same to me...i guess overall balance is more important than swingweight balance...as long as you can feel the head in the swing it's alrite with me!!! as far as tipping i'd suggest following the tipping instructions that the factory recomended...

What heads are these going into? If it's .355 taper tip, when you buy the set, you'll have different lengths of shafts (and no tipping required), just butt trim to length.

If you're playing standard lengths and replacing dynamic gold, there won't be any swing weight issues if you're playing the clubs at the same length. DGSL has a different balance point so they swing weight the same.

Swing weight can make a difference in tempo and feel. My girlfriend is 6' tall and a great athlete. Yet she really struggles to hit my clubs (D0) and constantly complains that they feel too heavy even though they're really light by men's standards. So yes, swing weight can make a big difference. There are some people who can feel the difference between D1 and D2. There are others who couldn't tell the difference between C8 and D6 (I imagine your clubmaker is the latter :)).

How old is your nephew and what are his vitals? Have him give the clubs a try, if it looks like he's a little quick get that SW up. If the clubs look heavy, keep things light.

Hope that helps. A little more info can help dial things in a bit more :ok:

The irons that I want to reshaft for him are Nike NDS irons which are .370 tip. He has a very nice and hard swing for his age (15) and is a pretty big kid. I think the Uniflex shafts cause him to hit the ball way to high but he likes the light weight. I thought the Dynamic Gold SL S300's would be a nice shaft for him. I have a simular set and I think they would be good for him as well. Opinions??

Here are the tip trimming instructions for DGSL parallel tip:

I think you're correct about the shafts. The DGSL's have been getting awesome reviews from just about everyone who's got them. Try building the six iron to standard length and D2 swing weight first and see how he likes it. If things are good and he's happy with the length, go ahead and build the rest of the set.

Hope that helps, mice thing you're doing for your nephew!

I think swing weight is the issue here. I realized that some shafts is better with heavier SW while other is better with lighter SW. I have Project X with SW D2 and it feels great for me. On the other hand, my friend tried the same shafts with D0 SW and it just won't work. The shafts just feels bad and lost of distance. Another example is Nippon Steel shaft. This thing like it light some where between D0 to D1 is okay D2 will get it to be too whippy. Dynamic Gold also like heavier SW somewhere between D1-D3 should be fine, lighter than that the shafts won't response as well. I have not experience DG SL shafts yet but I think it should be similar in SW as DG.

I would recommend D2 SW of all irons 3-PW if you are reshafting with DGSL S300 and for wedges I like heavier SW, D3 for Gap wedge and D5 for Sand wedge and Lob wedge. Hope this helps.
