Shaft Help for Titleist 735's, Plus Wedges

Long time lurker, first time poster. When it finally came time for a legitimate golf equipment question, I knew where to turn. :) Hopefully I can remember to include all the pertinent info in this post...

So after many good years with my current set of irons, I decided to upgrade as a way to treat myself for finishing up my PhD. I have been playing a component set (Golfsmith XPC2000s) with old-school TT Lite shafts (stiff) since I was 13. They've been bent and extended over the years but I figured it was about time for a new set of irons.

After many demo day trips, I finally decided on the Titleist 735.CM's (chrome carbon steel). I'm somewhat of a traditionalist, so if I can't get the chromes based on my upcoming fitting session, I will probably look at the Mizuno MP-32's or MP-60's. Let's hope it won't come to that, because I've had my heart set on the Titleists for a long time now. Anyone know how many degrees upright I could order the chromes from Titleist's custom department?

So, that brings me to my question. I've had trouble in the past hitting my long irons high, so I was considering opting for Flighted Rifles. However, I know that the iron heads themselves are designed as a flighted set, so would that be overkill? I haven't been blown away by the Dynamic Golds in demo clubs - trajectory is a bit low for my liking. Also, is there a difference between Flighted Rifles and Tour Flighted Rifles? I've seen references to both on this board. My driver swingspeed is right around 100, and 6-iron was around 83 (avg. ~180 carry) at last check, so I was encouraged to stick with stiff shafts. My tempo is on the smooth side however, and I have never felt like I truly "load" a shaft. My clubfitter suggested S300's, which he said would put me about 5.5 on the Rifle scale if I went that route. I'm 6'3, 200 pounds, and my current set is playing 1/2" over standard and 2 degrees upright. Good ball striker - it's my horrible short game that is primarily responsible for my 15 handicap.

A couple new wedges are also on my list. I have a Cleveland FormForged 900 series gunmetal, 60 degrees, low bounce option, but I've never really liked it. It's great for flop shots, but the low bounce really hurts my performance with it from 40 yards and out. Based on the 47 degree PW loft of the 735's, I was considering adding a 52 degree gap wedge and going with a 58 degree sand/lob combination, with traditional bounce angles. Most likely Vokeys, with the 58 being a spin milled. I'm in Texas and moving to Oklahoma, so my guess is that playing conditions will be hard and dry. I'd probably be classified as more of digger than a slider.

Any suggestions and comments are welcome! I'll be back looking for insight on fairways/hybrids/driver shafts this summer after my bank account recovers...

Erm well I've had 735's since chrimbo and with my previous set (ben hogan blades) I struggled to hit long irons but with the 735 I havent had any problems and have even put my 3 iron back in the bag. I have Dynamic gold R300's in mine and like the feel and performance i get from them! The only way you are going to find out what suites you best is to go and try the different shafts! also ur wedge set sounds good, I am currently waiting for the a spin milled oilcan 58degree wedge to complete my set up. Good luck, hope u love ur 735!!

I'm pretty sure you can get up to 2* upright in the chromes and 4* in Stainless.

As for the long irons .. they are the reason I went with the 735's. I find them super easy to hit. I have DGS300 in mine and they still launch nice and high in the long irons. However, It all depends on the person's swing. I suggest trying both types of shafts out if possible or get a fitter to look at your swing and get some insight from him.

I have a little higher SS than you but even when I smooth them I still get nice launch angles.

If your fitter suggested DGS300, and you like the way they feel, I would go with them because they are truly great shafts.
