I believe that the ones Bubba plays are different than the ones that may come to retail. I think his have increased offset, and maybe something different in the sole (ie grinding).

If a set does come to retail they'd be sweet!

Bubba's coming to the CVS Charity Classic in June. I think it's the best field they've ever had: Of course Billy Andrade and Brad Faxon (hosts) along with locals Dana and Brett Quigley. Along with them Tim Clark, Chris DiMarco, Fred Funk, Lucas Glover, Tim Herron, JB Holmes, Hale Irwin, Peter Jacobsen, Tom Lehman, Davis Love III, Jose Maria Olazabal, Nick Price and Mike Weir. Plus two more players to be named later. Can't wait.

There are what appears to be Black Nickel S-59s floating around. I sent the pictures I had from a college tournament to a friend at Ping. He confirmed that the only set of true black nickel chrome S-59s are still in Bubba's bag--no right handed have been built. What these were and the others that have been spotted are original S-59s in the first finish that is much darker than today's original no ferrule finish. They then repaint the letters and numbers in white ala the wedges and add ferrules. You get a very close facsimile to what a black nickel chrome S-59 would look like.

 

Still no plans for a black nickel chrome S-59 for the foreseeable future. I check with them frequently as I would be interested in getting a set just for the reduction in rust they would provide.

According to the local Ping rep in FL, there are no plans to release these to the public. The process is too difficult and expensive to manufacture in quantity.

The process is expensive only in that it is done in China--shipping. Black Nickel Chroming has been around for many years. I have no doubt if there were any decent platers left in the U.S. they would do them, just like the old days when they had Ruger do custom lofted TISI drivers. But they aren't willing to guess on how many color codes to do since it isn't a high volume iron to begin with.

I'll see if I can't find the pictures my brother sent me that have the repaint and ferrules added to the old finish. Look very much like a Black Chrome S-59 Tour. I never posted them because they were a homemade version.
