Cleaning Grooves on Wedges

Tried everything

There is dirt wedged in my wedge (hmm...that sounded wierd). I think its because I dont clean them often and have played several times in muddy conditions in the past few months. I have tried using the brush designed to clean clubs as well as us a towel with warm water on it.

Should I soak the clubs -- will this ruin the finish on my clubs? Is there any special solution for this?


Sorry if its dumb question -- not used to cleaning my own clubs!

what finish do you have??? yes it will take off some rust, but it will come back, gunmetal will be fine, so will chrome. and a wet towel and some elbow grease should get it out. if it really is bad use a tee w/ a sharp point, maybe a toothpick, an old tooth bursh works well too. it really is a LOT easier than you make it out to be...

I usually rinse my clubs and clean the groove with a brass brush. I can't really say tha it has shown any extra wear to my clubs other than taking some of the rust off my wedges.

 

 

On the course I use the Tee method alot.

Soak them in hot water with a little dish soap and lemon juice. A few mins should be more then enough - a few runs over with SOS pad or a normal copper scrubbing pad and they should be looking good.

 

If all else fails, just buy a new one :)

i will often take a thumbtack and get the gunk out of grooves and then comeback and brush it or wipe it. with my unchromed nikes i just go to town as the rust will come back. the vokey oil cans i am more careful with as i want to keep as much of the oil can look as possible.

I have used a very thin nail, like a finishing nail with a piont before. Just run it along the groove once, back and forth after putting the club in warm water (with some soap) if preferred. Should get the dirt right out and not really affect your grooves.

I use an ultrasound "cleaner" (for free at my club), similar to the ones you clean jewelery with, only bigger. :)

soak it in water for a few minutes and use a old toothbrush. if that doesn't work use a industrial strength pressure washer :)

If you haven't purchased the little Dremmel golf cleaning tool definitely check it out--that thing is awesome!!

It should only take about ten seconds with water and a brush. Were you hitting off freshly laid concrete?

Do NOT use a brass or other metal brush for chrome plated forged clubs! Use a nylon brush.

Am I the only one who still cleans his clubs with a wet towel after each shot? Keep a tee in your pocket for the wide grooved wedges. That's the easiest thing to do IMHO.

i agree, using a wet towel while you play/practice makes cleaning clubs a lot easier. doesn't allow for buildup and also gives you rest in between shots on the range. if not, just use warm water and a bristle brush. good luck

You need to use a brush that has fine but stuff bristles to clean out the grooves! I had a regular nylon bristle brush (like you'd use to clean tiles in your bathroom) but the bristles were too wide to get into the grooves, so it really didn't do anything. I have one of those little brushes that attaches to your towel (it looks like a little knob) that works perfectly.

 

Somebody mentioned that you shouldn't use a brass brush. Actually, the brass brush should work fine with chrome-plated irons. You don't want to use it on titanium faces or raw finishes if you can avoid it though. But this is really all about the bristle size (brass is really small so should be quite effective).

:beee: This drives me CRAZY when I see this kind of post! I always keep my clubs clean between shots by at LEAST running a tee through the grooves to get the gunk and mud out.

 

People always see my car, and ask me how I keep it so clean. My standard answer is............

 

CLEAN IT!!! Is that so hard? Of course you know I'm just giving you some grief here! :)

:) just clean 'em while you play. don't you ever use the same club more than once during a round? why would you want to play with crud building up in your grooves affecting the club's performance?

Has there ever been a club that was so dirty that if you let it soak for five minutes in a bucket of warm water and dish soap, and then cleaned it with an old toothbrush and a damp towel, it wouldn't be as clean as it can be?
