New driver possibly

Hey All:

I posted a similar post over in the clubmaker's forum. I'm just looking for some insight so here goes. I wasn't too sure where to post it so I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone.

I'm thinking about pursuing a new driver and I really need some help. I'm getting set to go into a Tour this season with my first event coming up on May 9th. I like my Cobra 460SZ but I'm not so crazy with the loft. It is a 10.5* head and feel that maybe a lower lofted head would suit me better.

I was wondering if some fitters had some insight for me. My current shaft is a Accuflex AccuLAUNCH 80 S flex at 44.75" long. My swing speed is 107 mph at impact but I do peak at 117mph just prior. My release is just a little early as I saw at an extensive fitting about a month back and I'm bleeding 10 mph as a result. I'm working hard to get that 10 mph back. With clubhead speed like that what would be a good loft to have. I'm looking for a penetrating ballflight with the added bonus of having roll that I currently don't have with the 10.5*. I'm thinking Wilson Staff, SQ, Taylormade or others like Bang, SMT etc. Really I am open minded as to what brand.

Checkout Bridgestone J33R 460cc and Accra SC series.

 

The J33R hits pretty flat....you'll get roll fo shizzle. Plus it sounds awesome...muted for any head size, not just 460cc.

Thanks. Which lofted head are you referring to? I'm checking out stuff for the next few days and likely buying by the weekend...if I do.

A second vote for the J33R 460. I have the 10.5º head. It is an ACTUAL 10.5º. You Cobra may say 10.5º, but have you had it measured? In any event, the J33 460 is just a money club. Square face. Plenty of forgiveness. Wants to go straight all day, yet I can work it either way. Sound is just indescribably delicious. Feel is incredible. Right now, I have the J33 460, G5, Hi-bore, Launcher Comp, and 905T in my possesion. I'm reviewing the G5 and hi-bore, but the J33 is my gamer. I love it and it has ruined my desire to play other drivers. Seriously.

UST V2 75 stiff (you could probably go X; it'll need to be tipped either way.) Playing it at a controllable 44.5", D3 swingweight with no lead tape or tip weighting necessary. (204 gram head weight- bravo Bridgestone!) It had the NV 65s in it when it arrived, but it felt harsh with that shaft. The V2 is the real deal. I have no snap-hooked a drive yet this season. The ballflight is very flat and powerful, but it is mid/high for lots of carry. I still get some good roll with this combo. I've read posts by people with 120+ MPH SS's that still play the 10.5º in this head. I was scared it would hit too low when I first got it, but it's perfect. I swing at a modest 108-110 MPH. I have not lost any yardage with the shorter length, and in fact, I think I have gained some with this head and shaft combo, despite the shorter length. Funny how they go farther when they're in the short stuff! :)

 

Bottom line: Best driver I have played at ANY price point.

 

By the way, how do you like the Acculaunch? I'm supposed to have one of those on the way myself and was thinking about putting it in the Ping G5.

I just added the cally x460 from a bridgestone 420 in my bag. both with the same shaft, they both get the same penetrating ball pattern i enjoy. and both explode off the face. I know bridgestones are harder to get locally so if you are in crunch for time try the x460. it's actually surprisingly good.... and this coming from a 15+ year bridgestone fanatic.

Can you get fitted? I went today to check out the latest and greatest drivers. The 905R came closest, but I wasn't as consistent as my Ben Hogan. Getting a stiffer shaft in it and maybe going to try the 905R with a different shaft, but we'll see. Anyways, make sure you get the real story before you buy...nothing like spending money on a driver that isn't fight for you.
