I was wondering if anyone had some insight on this subject. What are the grips that Phil is using, does not appear to be a golf pride or lamkin grip, anyone know?

When I saw him play he was using some kind of Royal Leather Wrap I think.

Phil has been using Royal grips for years. Lamkin purchased the grip portion of the Royal Precision golf company a few years ago.

Phil, like the official Master's post earlier said, plays the Royal Grip sand wrap .580. I know its the .580 because they have a white ring around the top and bottom and the .600 does not, atleast I haven't found one yet that does. Royal Precision used to make them, now I only find them on the Lamkin website. I have played the golf pride tour velvet and cord grips, and I like the sand wrap much better. They are kind of soft, yet tacky and gritty. They will tear a hole in your glove after a while around the base of the palm, that maybe the only downside. I love them

I generally prefer the quality of Royal Grips to Golf Pride. My favorite tour velvet style grip is the Royal STS, which performs as well as GP Tour Velvet, and doesnt get shiny and slippery quite as fast. Lamkin Crosslines are great too, if you can find the black version- the regular version has too much white for me.

 

Similarly, I had sand wrap on my wedges, and they performed great.

Phil has been using Royal Precision shafts for a long time. Royal Precision also owned Royal grips, so it was a natural that Mr. Mickelson use a shaft and grip from them. They were also based in Scottsdale, AZ, where Phil attended ASU for four years, then continued living there after college. The proximity of Royal Precision/Rifle was a factor in Phoenix's new adopted son Phil using a "local product". (He also played a lot of Ping products back then, another Phoenix based company). As we know, he has since moved back to his native San Diego for some years now, but the fact remains that he is comfortable with the Rifle shafts (Project X), and the Royal Sand Wrap grips. Royal Precision sold off the grip portion of their business a few years back to Lamkin, which still owns and manufactures the grips today.

 

I have two Cleveland wedges with rifle spinner shafts, and these sand wrap grips. They feel terrific... tacky and firm,. I don't wear a glove, so I can't speak to the grips being harsh on a glove, like another fellow wrx'er states above.

There was a golfdigest article talking about tearing a hole in the right base of your glove for right handers (left handed glove) but I recently heard that Ben Hogan said this is a good thing. The grips do not cause the glove to tear after a round or two, usually it takes about 5 rounds and a few trips to the range; maybe all gloves wear out after that much action. I would rather keep buying new gloves than switch grips.

any idea on what he is wearing for shoes? pretty sure he was a FJ guy prior to joining Callaway. does he wear callaway shoes now too? tough to tell since he pretty much only wears plain black ones (or dark snake skin)

Titleist used to use the Royal Perf Wrap on their clubs as a stock grip I believe. I've had them on my PTs for years. They last forever it seems and are pretty comfortable. My PTs are the old , non-bore models and they still have the Titleist grips on them. Glad Lamkin bought them up. :)

Yep, Phil has been using this grip for a while now. So have I. Its really the only grip that I have ever liked. Great grip yet still fairly soft. I love the feel Plus they are pretty cheap (Under $2.00 ea) which doesn't hurt any and they last forever. Heres a pic of them.
