Check your weight transfer. The bottom of the arc of a swing in most cases is dirrectly below your sternum. If your sternum moves behind the ball in your backswing and remains there through the downswing you'll hit chunks or if you pull up to avoid the chilli you'll top it. Work on hitting pitches with your weight favoring your target side foot, make decending blow at the ball and pinch it off the turf. Sounds like you may be hanging back on your trailing foot, work on getting your weight to your left side through impact. HTH

When I hit thin shots it's usually because I'm already looking to see how good of a shot it is at impact. When I get in a habit of doing this, I go to the range and hit 40 or 50 balls and never look up to see where they are going, just kinda feel wether I hit it good or not. Seems to help me stay down through impact.
