New X Tour Irons

Recommended Posts

Any info on the rumored newer updated X Tour Irons
I have heard that Callaway is developing and or testing a updated X tour Iron with a thiiner topline and sole.

I have heard that this has been confirmed by Callaway Golf.

Anyone know when these might be released??

I have seen pics in the past or players testing clubs similar to the above described but nothing concrete. I guess now that Callaway has validated the rumors as true its just a matter of time as more details begin to come to light.

Thanks and I can't wait!!!!!! I just hope its sooner than 2007.

There have been various pictures (no real close up shots spring to mind, although I could be wrong) in WITB tournament features (on this site) of updated X-Tours minus the cavity medallion (which are probably the ones you've seen anyway). Going by Callaway's previous practice, most iron models get two seasons and then they're replaced - so one could make the broad assumption that a retail version of an updated X-Tour won't hit the racks until 2007, as the current model is only entering its second full year in the product range.

Yes one of the recent threads said something like fall '07.

They have various grinds marked T that probably number around 9 that have different top line and different sole grinds. All of this is just cosmetic. You will not see a top line or a sole that is a traditional width with the present design. If they redesign the club totally maybe but the naturre of the undercut weight pad design prevents anything but cosmetic grinding. Some like the bounce removed but personally having tried all of the variants I can see no difference in performance. The old pictures were just without the medallions. Callaway fits sets for the pros at the tours like that with weights in the shaft or tape in the cavity to get to the right combo. They then get them built or build them on the spot with the proper weighted medallion---kind of hard to vary the medallions on the range.

If Mickelson keeps having success with the present model don't count on anything new for a while. The sales have picked up again since the masters according to our rep./shop.

I have been told by a friend that callaway clearly stated that they are "in the works" with a new X-tour with a thinner sole, thinner topline, players cavity as compared to the current model.

I agree that Callaway will most likely stick with thwe current model for another year or so. But I bet that they may release this model in a years time and perhaps deisignate it a "Pro Series" like the X-18. The X-18 PS has a thinner sole, topline and less offset than the normal X-18 so this seems to follow the same pattern.

Also i can only see this club getting even more tour usage since the only complaints that have been made of the current model is that the sole and topline are to thick for the better players game and eye.

If it happens i can only see Callaway selling the hell out of this club and it being out of stock everywhere like many of other Callaways new hot items.

I guess the better players game and eye that the current X-Tours don't fit would include Mickelson and Cambell just to mention a couple (let's see U.S. Open, Masters, PGA). Think what they could do with a better looking club to their eye. They both sucked it up coming from "traditional" looking irons with their previous sponsors. There have been not spotted or photographed any new irons on the tours (the ones shown often are just today's model without the medallion which is always done to get the pros swingweight right) so they are a long ways from coming to market. If they do come with a more traditional blade expect that to be the death nell of Hogan. Since this current model is a design from long before callaway bought them (you can tell because they have a 1 iron and nobody designs/offers a 1 iron anymore so it is an old design) That would probably coincide with an update to the current X-Tours.

You will not get anything other than there are many models being evaluated from anyone that is at callaway in any position of knowledge. Since they are publically traded it would be just stupid to make specific statements about upcoming clubs that are just glimmers in the designers minds.

They need to do something. They are not selling at all in the UK. Local pro is offering a set for £200 under list and largest discount store in the area doing the same. No interest at all. MP32 and MP60 have killed them dead. Also in UK RRP is £700+ or $1200, with steel shafts, simply way too expensive.

I am playing in our first big county comp this aft, will do a quick club audit and report back later.

mizuno and ben hogan are far and away the most popular blades at my club. titleist player's cavities are very popular but many people think titleist's blades arent quite as soft as mizunos and hogans. titleist and mizuno are the most popular player's cavities. i have a good friend that is a 6 handicap and plays x-tours, but overall i see a lot of players that play to a 10-17 playing x-tours. i think that's fine, if mid handicappers want a compact head cavity they're a great choice if they suit their senses.

in terms of chunkier cavities for all players, ping and callaway are probably about 10 times more popular than the next brand when it comes to the I5, G5, eye2, i3, etc and callaway with the x14, x18, fusions, big bertha, etc... no other manufacturer comes close.

cleveland irons are few and far between and taylormade irons are non-existent.

a few guys have nike irons, 2 i know have the pro combo. 4 guys i can think of recently switched to bridgestone irons.

this is by no means a scientific survey, just a summary of a single club that may have no relation to the general public.

wouldnt it be incredible to see callaway make a real blade?? or maybe even a fake blade like the mp-32's or grad mp's.

i would love to see the design that they would come up with without ripping anyone off.

and as for ME + X-Tours = no confidence with 6i-PW

What are you talking about? I don't see anyone being forced to buy anything they don't want or can't afford. Really odd comment.

What are you talking about? they mean they would like to see what a traditional blade made by cally would end up looking like. And he said he doesnt have any confidence in the shorter irons with x tours. His opinion nothing else. Read things more carefully before jumpin down peoples throats.

Actually YOU should read things more carefully before you jump down people's throats. The comment was referring to "ripping anyone off" not that he didn't have any confidence in the scoring irons--perfectly resasonable opinion--but not the ripping off comment. YOU CAN'T BE "RIPPED OFF" IF YOU DON'T PURCHASE IT---PURELY UNDER YOUR CONTROL. So as you advised read more carefully!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have owned 15 sets of players CBs & blades(95% forged) over the last 10 years.I usually like a shinny ,ferruled, non emblemed , thin topline iron. That said I think the Xtours are beautifull. And so do many others. To each his own,but this "thick topline" crap gets to me.I bet your such a great player you hit a butter knife thats on the end of a stick.

Sorry pal wrong again. What design they would come up with without ripping anyone off refers to not using someone elses design :)

Man you guys take stuff personally huh. Why even post a review if we are gonna get reamed over it. Callys have thick top lines. Not crap its a fact deal with it. Some people dont like that. I like the x tours i play em myself. If some people dont like the looks thats their perogative and not for you to say its crap.

Well this thread has pretty much run the full range of nonsense. Wouldn't it be easier to agree some people like X-Tours, some don't. X-Tours have thicker toplines than some clubs and thinner than others. X-Tours have tour proven success, but your personal mileage may vary.

I know the weather is warming up, so go play some golf, hit some X-Tours, anything but some of the above posts.

Jeez, some of you guys arguing over X-Tours are starting to make the Nike arguments look civilized.
