Best Guitarist Ever?

who is the best with an ax?

I liked the post about who the best drummer was so much that I decided to start a thread on who the best guitarist is/was.

Setting my affinity for modern metal aside I have to say David Jon Gilmour from Pink Floyd.

I'm thinking either Steve Vai or Yngwie Malmsteen (technically more to Yngwie, but Vai gets some bonus "style" points).

 

'Course, I was just a dumb kid rockin' the mullet back in the day (shut-up, they were cool back then! :) ), and I was probably under the influence, so may not have been the best judge of ability. :ok:

I didn't know who this guy was until a few years ago when my wife took me to one of his concerts. It was great!

 

Ottmar Liebert.

 

He and Santana play similar music. I think Liebert learned from Santana.

It's hard to compare guys who play different styles of music, but just based on what that guy can do with a guitar I'd have to go with Satriani too. The first time I listened to Surfing With The Alien I was in awe....

 

... then again Eddie Van Halen did marry Valerie Bertinelli.... yep, based on that EVH gets my vote. :)

Have to go with Satriani, with a close second tie between Steve Vai and Eric Johnson.

So many different styles and great guitarists it makes it hard isolate to best ever.

 

For blues/rock I have to go with Stevie Ray Vaughen, but then again Jimi Hendrix has been so influential on so many different guitarist that he deserves some credit.

 

Other fav's include: Slow hand, Satriani, Steve Vai, Eddie, Santana, Chet Atkins, and many more I can't even think of.

There's way to many "great" guitarists for me to pick a favorite. I will say that the Clapton vs. Roberton showdown in The Last Waltz is just incredible and worth checking out if you haven't seen it.

One you all know, just may not think of, who IMO is the best guitarist ever is Mark Tremonti. He is the lead guitar for Alterbridge, formerly for Creed.

Yes, Gatton must be on the list...Along with Cliff Gallop, Les Paul and although not a super talent in the technical sense, Harrison must make the list because his playing defined a sound.
