Driver Shaft Help

Ping G5 10.5
I need help picking the right shaft for my Ping G5 Driver. I can't find a fitter in my area or someone with a Launch Monitor so I'm looking for some advice on a shaft for my driver.

I have a new Ping G5 10.5 degrees with a Aldila NVS. I hit the club really solid, but my ball flight is too high and I don't get any roll, the ball goes straight up and the hits a wall and drops. I hit the ball 240 yards (all carry). I realize that the shaft is not right. I know my swing speed is 100 mph.

I'm looking at making a change in shaft to get me a better trajectory and distnace. Im thinking about the Aldial NV, The Graphite Design YS-6+, or V2 65 gram. Unless anyone has other ideas on shafts.

Any advice?

The three shafts you mentioned all have different bend profiles, with the NV being tip stiff butt soft, the YS-6+ being tip soft butt stiff, and the V2 falling somewhere inbetween. How do you know which one is for you without trying all three?

Since you don't have access to a launch monitor, it makes things a little more difficult to validate which shaft is best for you numbers wise. However, I think I can help you find a profile of shaft that's right for you based on your swing style and tempo.

Answer these questions honestly (you may even want a friend or your Pro answer them for you) because the better you do, the better the shaft will be fitted for you.

First is shaft weight. You should pick a shaft weight based on your strength and tempo. If you have a fast tempo (Nick Price) and have a short compact swing, it's a good bet you'll be a good fit in a heavier shaft. A smoother swinger with a longer arc (Luke Donald) is a better fit for a lighter shaft.

Butt stiffness be decided on by how you load the shaft at the top. A hard pause at the top and a short swing is often better suited for a stiff butt section. A smooth transition at the top and a longer swing is better suited to a flexible butt shaft.

Tip stiffness is fit through how much lag you maintain. Golfers who cast or swing from the top of their golf swing can benefit from a soft tip shaft which will help maintain head lag and raise ball flight. Golfers who maintain lag through the downswing should play stiffer tipped shafts to delive the clubhead to the ball in the same fashion.

If you can answer these questions and identify your swing type we can find you a bend profile that will fit you and should be a good fit for your swing.

PS - One word of caution, it sounds like you're having trouble with a lot of spin (high ball flight that falls out of the sky with no roll). This can be caused by a severe descending blow with the driver in which case no shaft change will fix it. Make sure you're swinging well first. Your swing has a far greater influcne on ball flight than any shaft. :)

Answers:

1. medium tempo, short compact swing

2. hard pauseat the top with a short/compact swing

3. my pro said I maintain lag
