Colangelo to aquire The Wigwam Resort & Biltmore golf courses

PHOENIX (AP) — Former Phoenix Suns owner Jerry Colangelo and others plan to acquire the bankrupt Wigwam Resort west of Phoenix for $45 million.

The group is also acquiring two Biltmore golf courses. Kabuto Arizona Properties Inc. paid $70 million for the Wigwam in 1990.

Kabuto took the resort and golf courses into chapter 11 bankruptcy in May.

Anybody been out to the wigwam lately? Just wondering what kind of deals you can get before Colangelo aquires the property. I'd like ot play out there sometime, it was the first course I ever hit a golf ball on.

I've never played Wigwam but it's on my list of courses to try. What courses are you comparing it to when you say it's in poor condition? I usually play Karsten with my ASU student discount, so there's a point of reference for you to go by. For the time of year you can't go wrong with Bougainvillea. It's in pretty good shape right now and I just booked a tee time for tomorrow on GolfNow for $20. I still think I need to check out Wigwam for myself though...

I played in a tourney there back in November. Course was in bad condition IMO. rooms were nice though.

Sketchy conditions just about everywhere in the Phoenix area in November. (overseed grow-in)

$44 is an extremely good value anytime, let alone high season. I've been wanting to get out there to see the Forest Richardson renovation. Would like to read your comments after you play it fupresti.

And which course? The Red course is the worst of the three. The Gold and Blue are much better and I don't recall either of them being in bad condition. Unless something happened.

Most of the AZ courses I have played are in pretty bad shape, with the exception of Falcon Dunes. Seems everyone is on the "let the rough die off and we will call it links golf" bandwagon.

We were in Fountain Hills and I could not believe how bad FireRock looked.

???

Are you an Arizona resident? I can only assume you are not and have to believe that you are observing dormant bermuda roughs that are not overseeded? If so, this is quite normal and by no means does it indicate a course in "bad shape." It costs a LOT of money to overseed wall-to-wall and very few courses do it.

If this is not what you refer to, I would be interested to know more specifics of the bad conditions you encountered.

Interesting... Would like to know what courses you are playing? It is winter you know? Most courses have always let the rough go dormant in the winter. I agree more have gone with the same philosophy. But very many courses in the valley have a short "end rough" which they ALWAYS let go dormant. You just don't notice it because it is a thinner portion....then the desert.

Did you play Firerock? Because when I played everything was in great shape. The greens and fairways and boxes were impeccable. The rough is dormant.

As for totally green I can only think of a few courses that have always made it a philosphy to be totally green. If you want completely green then play Ocotillo or some of the other private courses.

One last point dormant grass does not equate to bad shape. The dormant grass on some courses is great to play off.

I was away from the game for going on 10 years. This is my first winter playing in almost a decade, I guess I when I used to play overseeding the rough was normal. Chalk it up to my time away from the game I guess.

It's all cool. Welcome back!

It may be that you haven't observed it because overseeding is a process unique to hot southern climates. The only grass that will take the hot AZ summers is Bermuda but unfortunately, Bermuda goes dormant in the coldest months. The Bermuda base turf never dies off, it just turns brown and stops growing. So around mid-October, they drop rye grass seed, water the hell out of it, and grow-in a green playing surface that lasts until the spring when the warm weather hits and Bermuda starts growing again and the rye dies off.

It is an expensive process so many courses don't do a wall-to-wall overseed. Many just seed the tees, greens and fairways which gives the look you encountered, stripes of green surrounded by brown dormant bermuda.

Actually dormant bermuda provides a fine playing surface - firm & fast. IF you like this kind of fun, check out Southern Dunes where, this winter they have overseeded only the tee boxes. The dormant bermuda greens are cut low and rolled daily, with enough moisture to keep the greens firm but receptive.

The best thing about that at Southern dunes is the course remains very playable while everyone else is scalping and seeding...

Played the Gold Course this weekend and it is in great shape. Fairways are tight and green. Putting surfaces are crisp. All in all it was a great time and only $44.00 with a cart which is awesome. Most of the west side courses I have played recently look like hell but this was a great change of pace. I may head back out to play Blue and Red in the coming weeks if the rates stay low.
