FOUND THE Rx FOR MY SHORT GAME

My game has always been very solid from the Tee Box to within 20 yards of the green. My putting has also been very good, and no problems in bunkers, (fairway and greenside.) What has been killing me has been the short pitches and chips inside 20 yards. I happened to read an article by Jack Nicklaus where he said that he used his sand wedge for ALL short pitches and chips to take the guesswork out of the picture. I had been trying 9 iron, 8 iron,5 iron PW, LW, Rescue Mid, 3 Wood, etc., etc. I started just using my 56* SW for everything inside 20 yards and.......Voila! SUCCESS! I would take my SW to work with me, and at lunchtime and after work I started working with just the one club for 3 months. I have gotten to the point now that I almost can't wait for a short pitch or chip. I pull them off about 95% of the time now. I realized that my biggest problem had been not being sure which club to use. Just thought I'd mention this in case others have been having the same problem. It was never a question as to wether or not I could hit the shot, rather I was never sure which club to use. The only exception now is if I have to really get it up high to clear a tall obstacle, and then I will use the 60* LW. Try it, you'll like it :)

When they interviewed Annika after the Colonial a few years back she said that was one of the biggest differences between the men's and women's tours....on the men's tour most of the guys use a 60* wedge for everything around the green.

I agree with lidomkj, golf is hard already, why make it harder by trying to work on a half dozen clubs to use around the green?

lidomkj/LT: Absolutely! My other Signature Line is and has been all my life: "Everything in Moderation, Keep it Simple, Less is Best." I love that SW inside 20 now. I can take it high, run it, stop it, even put a little "Tour Sauce" on it if I'm playing a 3 piece'er. But, like I said, I took that one club and worked with it every day for over three months. I never told my regular playing group that I was doing it, but all three of them noticed it the first time we went out this Spring. Made me feel good :)

What I do pretty much is hit one club all the time for chips on the fringe or just off ( I hit my 48* PW to get good run and minimized errors) and then for other shots depending on the time I want to air it or where the pin is, my lie, and obstacles; I might play my 54 or my 60*.

Usually I like to play a shot with the clubface a little open if I have some unfriendly grass for a lie. Cut across it and let it release but won't roll too far. I'll play that shot with either 54 or 60 depending on lie+pin.

Tyler: I have a question for you: An error which I encounter once in a while, when using the 60* Lob Wedge is; if I'm not really concentrating, the ball will skitter out to the right when chipping. I don't know if that is because I encounter some bad grass/lumps/etc., or if I forget to pinch with the right hand (counter-clockwise) to keep the clubface from opening. This will also happen on a short pitch occasionally with the 60*. It never happens with a max full swing, say 60 yards, when I really want to get the ball high, nor does it ever happen with any other club. Just the Lob Wedge. Is this because your 60* is (Usually) your most open faced/lofted club, and you have to guard against the face opening even more? You mentioned "Cut Across", can you elaborate on that. :)

I do the same thing and I've found a number of things can cause this:

- I'm coming over top and hitting the hosel. I think this is the same as cut across.
- Standing too close. I have this problem.
- Looking up before I hit the ball.
- Too much right hand.

Usually the bad grass/lump/lie results in a chunk.

I credit Utley and Michelson for my understanding of the different techniques for using the SW around the green.
I think Michelson's DVD is really good and demonstrates what Utley had in print.

What things do you find in common between Michelson and Utley?

They have the some principle to chip, bring the leading edge down with forward hands, constant face angle,
Just the only difference is that Phil tends to have much more forward press of the hands.
Stan has little forward movement of the hands and uses more lower body pivot.
I prefer Phil's style.
