Is the 983K or the 905R Titleist Best Driver Ever?

I have not hit the R but the K is definately a solid club. I would have gotten the K if my dad had not offered to but me an r7 since I was getting a driver for the first time after hitting 3 woods off the tee till I got down to 12. Looking at how dominant the K was all over the world though, I would have to say the K was better. If I could I would get a K as a backup but I have to control myself... space issues.... but more importantly, $$$ issues.

P.S. I paid for all my clubs except for the driver. I had to work so hard that I feel great when I use the clubs knowing what I had to so to get them.

I own both. The perfect driver EVER would be a 905R, with the K's sound. IMO the 983K was the best feeling driver available, until the R, which is now.

There is no way to argue about which driver is better NOW. R is newer, better longer but compared to conemporary drivers the K was way better. The R is basically the K + 100ccm. In times when people hit drivers that were smaller than 400ccm there was no way not to buy the K for any serious player. Nowadays I don't see that with the R because the options from other major brands are just as good as the R. So overall I'd say the K is the better driver measured against competing products.

I have the 983K, 983E and 905R. I have to say the R is the best all-around.

The K was very fun to play and had a great solid feel and sound. However, it put a lot of spin on the ball and, for me, seemed to have a draw bias.

The E has given me some of the best drives ever, and some of the worst. Has the perfect launch angle and spin rate for me, but too damn hard to hit consistently. I checked out the 905S, and definitely an improvement over the 983E, but still not super-forgiving.

The 905R is very forgiving, has a solid Titleist feel, for a 455cc driver. Although the launch and spin are slightly too high for me, seems like it's a very hot face and I still get a lot of carry with some roll-out (better carry than the E, but not as much roll).

Right now, the optimal driver for me is my Bridgestone J33R 8.5* with PM702 shaft. It's slightly better trajectory/spin than the Titleist 905R, but maybe not quite as forgiving. I'm going back and forth, but waiting for the 905M to come out. That should be my be-all, end-all (for at least a year).

  • 4 weeks later...

After 5 or 6 rounds with the 905r, my 983k is back in my bag. For now, I'm blaming the shaft-- my K has a stiff grafalloy prolite, and I kill it straight despite my swing speed being relatively high for that shaft (115-120). I bought the 905r to gain a little forgiveness, and to check out all the hype around the V2. I got a stiff V2, and hate it. I'll shortly be reshafting the 905r with Graphite Design pm702 x-stiff (someone stop me if this sounds like a horrible combo to you!), and hopefully that will get it back into my bag for a while. I have a 983e as well, but it's not in the same league as the k (IMO).

For anyone interested in the T, just picked one up at Golf Galaxy in Franklin, TN for $249. Evidently a clearance, as the 905S is still the same $399 price as the new 905R. I hit the T in the launch monitor and was hitting it longer and more solid than the R. Just thought anyone interested in the T, or looking for a backup, would like to know the price.

Does the 905R kick butt over the TM R7 460?

Have the R7, but you guys are making me reconsider.....

I have both - the R7 460 is more of a high handicap driver with its slightly closed face, big sweetspot and high trajectory. The 905R has also a bit of a closed face, but seem to hit the ball more straight anyway.

The trajectory of the 905R seem a bit flatter compared to the R7 460 (same loft, Fuji Reax 65 in R7 460 and UST V2 75 in 905R)

I would also say that high cappers could play the 905R and have fun, but the R7 460 is clearly in my view a bit more forgiving compared to the 905R. Both drivers are great - but not aimed at the same group of players.

The 905r is supposed to be square and the manufacturer tolerences allow them to be any were from 1* or so off. It is much more common to find a 905r that is a hair closed to maybe sqaure then to find one that is square to open. I just know that when I got mine I picked it out of 6 heads with the same shaft to find the one that was the most square. Just thought I could help.

Precisely ;)

My 905R is square, but I also picked it from 4 heads and they were certainly NOT all square.
