Im in the same boat, I can play great but when it comesto the range everything is just off. On an average day I can hit my 8 iron about 160yds but once Im on the range I start hitting it 140 max. Its really strange but at the same time I dont go to the range a lot because Im a member of just small little public course and dont want to pay for the balls. I think it must be a thing with concentration.

I have the same problem. It is not so bad with the irons or the wedges. But, for some reason when I get to the driver the more I hit the worse it gets. I have never hit as far on the range as I can on the course. guess it might be fatigue or concentration.

yea i have the same exact problem that you have. Whenever i go to the range i always hit the ball so bad its sad. I think its got somethign to do with the mats/grass you hit off of cause its nothing like the fairway or rough. Also the balls are pretty pathetic at the ranges near me so i feel like ive got no control.

since i cant practice on the range i usually just play a lot and drop balls sometimes when i play alone or with friends.

actually ill be honest with you guys those mats require you to pick the ball rather than hit down on it. The ranges that allow you to use the grass are usually already shredded up with divots and are uneven at most points in time.

Off topic, but this is such a pet peeve of mine.

The USGA needs to have a section in their ettiquete guide about CLUSTERING DIVOTS on driving ranges. You should be able to hit 60 to 70 golf shots and not use up an area larger than 1foot wide by 3 feet deep as long as you're hitting right where your last divot started.

while it's true that scattered divots heal faster than clustered ones; with clustered divots, ranges won't have to move their lines as much and can backfill, fertilize, and water less often. In the long run, that means they save more money and prices go down. Not to mention it's just courteous to the golfers hitting behind you.

Slightly different issue for me, but I always play significantly worse when I hit balls right before a round. I'm much better off getting a good stretch, swinging my heavy club 20-30 times, taking some practice swings with wedge, iron and driver then straight to the putting green for about 10 minutes prior to teeing off. I agree with earlier posts about mats, poor grass and crummy range balls contributing to difficulty simulating course conditions. After the first few times it happened to me I thought it might be a fatigue issue, but I know it's not that. I also thought I would have different results when I hit range balls prior to play on well maintained, high end course ranges but I still play worse even when I use the range to simulate the first few holes of a course (i.e. driver, then 6 iron, then chip etc.), as opposed to hitting 10 wedges or any other club consecutively. It must be a mental issue but even knowing that I can't seem to reverse the trend.

I'm 100% opposite.

At the range before the round today, contact was very solid. The ball was turning over a little bit more than I'd like, but nothing major. Then I go out and play. First hole, short par 4. Slightly thin iron off tee, solid second shot to 15 feet, 2 putts, par. A good start. Second hole, wicked push slice with 3 wood, majorly thin iron that goes 50 yards, another majorly thin iron into water. Walk rest of hole in frustration. Here we go... The rest of the 9 had a few good shots, but many disasters. At the end I was glad we were playing 9 and not 18.

With range play, there is no pressure. If a bad shot is hit there is no penalty, just scoop over another ball. Bad shots aren't really remembered, I'm working on my game. At the course, pressure can set in and tempo gets quick. I try to force things and don't just let them happen. The old faults start to creep in and it can snowball.

Next time I play the focus will be purely tempo. Counting 1-2 on the backswing and downswing or something similar to remove all mechanical thoughts and stay smooth.

Most ranges have limited flight balls. They don't spin very much and the cores can be pretty dead, even on new ones. I think they do this so that ranges can be built on less land.

I've heard guys talk about this before at the range, they say the balls are designed to go the same distance with irons but it only affects people with the driver if their swing speed is 105mph or more. I think its true because I hit my irons the same distance as on the course but with the driver I struggle to carry it over 250 and on the course I usually carry the ball around 280.
