5 wood or hybrid

I'd go 5 wood - just find it easy and reliable. Gets up high and goes far - you don't have to hit it hard - just use an easy swing.

Check out the Callaway X fairway 5 wood - not much of a Cally fan, but demoed this one and it's now in the bag - they did something with the leading edge and sole where it makes easy contact with the ball. The tip is .350. If interested, check out the shafts beforehand if you are a smooth tempo type - I usually play stiff but their regular flex seems to play firmish for a regular.

Personally I have more faith in five woods opposed to hybrid clubs. They provide you with lots of versatility anyway and they are really forgiving. There are a lot of good fairway woods out there so try and demo as many as possible to base your decision upon.

tm 200 steel 5w works well for me, it always find way back into my bag.

eventually, i added 54 to replace 52 & 56 wedges in order to keep

both 5woods and 3hybrid for long courses and windy days.

pros: more choices for shots between 190~220yd, fw, rough, tight-lie or even bunkers.

cons: without 52, there will be less choices for shots ranging 95-105yd, and without 56,

bunker shoot is harder control.

i really wish golfer can bring more clubs.

I actually carry both ... a TE Exotics 18 degree 5 wood and a 16 degree (hand picked to 17.5 degrees) #1 Nakashima NX-1 hybrid. Both have Accra HF M4 shafts. The hybrid is generally 10 yards shorter than the 5 wood, but more reliable. As such, on the tighter course, I play the hybrid and give up a little distance. Both are excellent clubs and I'd highly recommend them. The Nak looks very similar to the Nickent, but I think it has a little better feel. Good luck!!!

i like the hybrid. i went through a faze where i couldn't hit my 5-wood and i picked up a 2-iron (nike pro combo) and a 18* nike pro combo utility iron. i could hit the 2 iron better than the wood. the pro combo utility iron was was like cheating. i've since gone to a taylormade rescue dual tp 19* and a nike slingshot tour 18*.

yes, the hybrid is a little shorter (although i've extended the shafts on mine to help that a little) but for me, i am able to hit the hybrids more consistent, from a larger variety of lies (fairway, rough, sand, uphill, downhill, etc...). also, the hybrid is much easier to land softly on the green for me. i use the hybrid much more during a round than i ever used a 5-wood (this isn't just because i struggled with the 5 wood).

how much shorter do you guys tghink most hybrids are then a fairway wood of the same loft? (i.e 19 degrees for both, or 18)

It really depends on which club fits your swing. Some people a sweepers with a naturally shallow swing and can hit fairway woods reliably off the deck or even in deep rough.

Others have a steeper swing and hit hybrids better since they put more of a descending blow on the club.

Which one goes further depends on which one will fit you. Ask yourself, do you hit your three wood better, or your three iron. That should tell you which one will fly the furthest.

I like hybrid better. I'm currently using FW 15 degree, and cleveland halo 22 degree. The 22 degree I have around 195-200 yards a little shorter than 5 wood but I get more consistency. Also, I can play out of sand and rough with ease and around the green too. Right now it is the most frequently use club in my bag.

Recently I demo nike slingshot tour utility club. It is also a good choice with decent shaft. Try both halo and slingshot out, pricing is also very good.
