Titleist Got It Right - Almost...

Right iron, wrong model
A few weeks ago, the head of my 6 iron flew off at the range, and I was unable to retreive it. I went to an authorized Titleist reseller to contact Titleist and inquire about a replacement. Titleist indeed offered to replace the head for shipping costs only, and to send the shaft in so that they could do the re-head for me. For that I am truly grateful!

Nevertheless, they got it ALMOST RIGHT... The iron in question is the 690 DOT MB, but the replacement was the Titleist 690 (no dot) MB. The serial number of my previous iron has been transferred to this club, and they even replaced the grip with a new GP Tour Velvet with the logo up. The club arrived at the shop today with shrink wrap and bubble wrap, and I thought that all was well...until I noticed the lack of the dot.

Spec wise, it's the same club. However, should I be concerned that the 6 iron is "no dot" MB while the rest of my irons are "dot" MB?

Are you sure the specs are the same? The change from the 690MB to the 690 "Dot" MB was changing the length and lie angle (I believe the "Dot" is 2 degrees more upright, but don't quote me on that - I know that the specifications for the "Dot" MB and "Dot" CB put them in line with the DCI specs). Since its your own shaft, the length should be right, but the lie angle may be incorrect, you may want to have that checked.

Other than verifying the lie angle, I wouldn't be too concerned about the 6 Iron being a 690MB and the rest of your clubs being the "Dot" MB.

I think I would have kick sombodies Word not allowed to get the head from the range!! They really wouldn't just let you walk out there and get it? I'd have a big problem with that.

I guess you didn't read his story. He was mad about it.

Classic,

If it's me, I would kindly ask them if they would correct it. (I know, I know. You're in a difficult position to do so when they offered to replace it with no charge.) It's kinda my pet peeve. Even if the specs are the same, I like things to match. For example, it would annoy me if the Ping irons do not have matching serial numbers. If that's the case, I guess I have to have the serial numbers buffed off. Back to your case, also, I'd think if'll affect the resale value.

As a side issue to this head flying off business. Anyone find Titleist club specs really annoying (as an average height 5'9" player)? Their standard 5 iron 62 degree lie angle is really upright in comparison to most other manufacturer's specs - especially Mizuno (and I know the average Japanese golfer is shorter). I got a set of 735.CMs bent two degrees flat and they didn't make a great job of them - the backs of the hosels on each club were marked (the golfing equivalent of stretch marks), as were the soles right in at the heel.

True - the single lack of a dot has caused me all of this anguish! The sad thing is that if I keep it this way, the resale value will indeed be affected. I know I wouldn't buy a non-matching set...

My Titleist account store opens in a few minutes. I'll call them to inquire...

All right! Titleist agreed to replace the club with the correct model!

I sent it back this morning, and I will reacquaint myself with my old irons - Mizuno MP-14!
