Taylormade Tour Trailer Tidbits

Nine of the top 11 players in the world are here for the Wachovia Championship including TaylorMade Tour Staff professionals Retief Goosen and Sergio Garcia. Quail Hollow Country Club is a phenomenal course with long fairways and high rough. The players are constantly commenting that a major could definitely be played here. The weather is great and all the tour reps, caddies and players have been treated very well.

The strong field meant plenty of media stopping by to visit the trailer and interview some of the players. A local CBS affiliate came out to do a story on Monday and came back again on Wednesday to do interviews with Justin Rose, Graeme McDowell and Jay Williamson. We were also visited by a local ABC affiliate as well as the Golf Channel, who continues to do tons of coverage on the TaylorMade tour staff - including an interview with Graeme McDowell and his new TaylorMade TP Red ball.

Speaking of the new ball, the new TaylorMade TP golf balls are once again making a great showing with Graeme McDowell (TP Red), Robert Damron (TP Red), James Driscoll (TP Red), Ian Leggatt (TP Black), Justin Rose (TP Black), Sergio Garcia (TP Red) putting them into play.

This course requires a great amount of shot-shaping and is perfect for TaylorMade Staffer John Daly’s style of play. Fellow tour rep Scott Cuppett and I had a chance to accompany John to the local Hooters again to help him with apparel and hat signings. It was great to see so much TaylorMade and Maxfli exposure, and as always, it’s amazing to see the positive response he gets from the public and how well he relates to his fans.

On Wednesday, the Pro-am brought out many celebrities and a sold-out crowd with so many golf-starving fans (as it’s the first of only two PGA stops in North Carolina this year), it looked like a major around the greens - very impressive.

There was a lot of interaction this week with the players coming in for driver fittings. The presence of the new r7 460 is drawing more attention which has many players making requests. Again, we had just ten on hand: five 9.5s and five 10.5s, and were only able to give them out to a select few which included: Tim Petrovic, Ian Leggatt, Patrick Sheehan, Carlos Franco, Greg Owen and Nathan Green. Carlos Franco worked with fellow tour rep Scott Cuppett doing some on-course testing with a 9.5°, RE*AX 75g and MWT set to neutral. After making a few adjustments on the course, he was hitting the ball better and longer. We spent some time explaining MWT and educating them on the differences with two TLC ports in a larger head vs. four ports in the smaller r7 425.

As for other driver builds, Mike Weir did some testing with a new RE*AX shaft for his r7 quad, and we also built him a special left-handed r7 460. Jeff Gove stopped by looking to get more distance out of his r7 425, so we hooked him up with a RE*AX 67g shaft and set his weight configurations to two 10-gram cartridges in the front and two 4-gram cartridges in the back. Other builds included Hidemichi Tanaka - r7 quad 8.5° with a lighter shaft for more clubhead speed; Sean O’Hair - r7 quad 10.5° bent to 10° to square-up the face; and Todd Hamilton - r7 quad 9.5° with a graphite PM 902 shaft.

Requests for irons were also big this week. Mike Weir tested some new rac LTs and we built him a left-handed set. We spent some time with Sergio Garcia on the range testing out some rac MB TPs with Project X Rifles making sure his lofts and lies were correct and he came away very happy with the results.

As for wedges, we were also kept busy building Sergio a rac Black TP 56° and 60° to complete his set and a rac Satin 60° for Carlos Franco. Retief Goosen spent some adequate time in the trailer this week, participating in the build of new rac TP Satin wedges 52° and 60° with a special-milled onset. He was present throughout the assembly and added his special grind to the hosel make it straighter and to his liking.

It was a good week for high-lofted fairway woods and Rescues. Players who can hit high and land soft, especially around the punchbowl greens, will succeed this week. We built plenty for players including:
Jay Williamson - r7 Ti 17.5°
Tag Ridings - 200 Steel (3)
Dean Wilson - Rescue dual 19°
Richard Johnson - r7 Ti 17.5°
Todd Fischer - V Steel 13° at 13° vs. his regular 13° bent to 11.5°
Mathew Goggin - Rescue dual 19° bent to 18° with MWT set for Neutral (12H, 4T)
Brent Geiberger - r7 Steel 15°

Next week we are heading back to Texas for the EDS Byron Nelson Championship.

I'm glad to hear this! I've said MANY times on internet forums that the R7 460 is one of the hottest clubs on the market, and it seems to be getting good Tour acceptance.
