Iron Ferrules - what do i need

minhjn

Recommended Posts

so confused
I'm sure this is a stupid question but i want to buy some colored ferrules to give to my clubmaker for a reshaft.

I'm reshafting mizuno irons which are .355 tapered tip. does anyone know what size i need with respect to inside diameter and outside diameter?

golfworks has both .355 taper iron ferrules and .370 iron ferrules. isn't a .355 taper shaft .370 where the ferrule will be, so why is there a difference?

also, would these fit on there?

what mizuno's do you have? when i get home from work later today i can dig out my micrometer and measure a mp-62 right on top of the ferrel if that would help you at all. if you call or email cell-parts and tell them your iron/shaft combo im sure they would know what you need

There is a difference in the fit to the shaft. The .355 will give a better friction fit to a taper shaft than the .370 which can be wobbly at the bottom unless there is collar at the bottom. Can be a big deal if you don't have a machine to turn down the ferrules in a home repair application. Getting the right ferrule with the proper ID and OD can make the home install so much easier.

Also, most ferrule manufacturers will have their ferrules in two versions. Friction fit and not friction fit depending on whether or not you want to put epoxy underneath the ferrule during installation. Most companies use a friction fit as it is less messy to deal with on the production floor and you can pre-seat the ferrules very close to final setting requiring minimal adjustment from the assembler (faster).

so for .355 taper tip shafts, it is best to get ferrules with a .355 inside diameter?

I reshaft Mizuno irons all the time. Get the .355 XL, which is more the length you need to match the Mizunos. Use a linen belt to turn down the edges of the ferrules because the diameter of the ferrules will be too wide. Then, get some acetone and cotton balls. Soak the cotton ball and lightly brush the cut ferrules up and down and they will be nice and shiny.

[/quote]

I tried using the .355 ferrules when I reshafted my MP-67's and they were way to tight, I couldnt get them on far enough to seat the shaft completely in the hosel. On a taper tip shaft as the name implies, only the tip is .355, the part of the shaft that the ferrule will actually sit is .370. As stated above, get the length as close to 1" as possible, thats what Mizuno uses on their MP line.

I just microed my MP 67's and an MP 62 I had sitting around and both had an outside hosel diameter ~.52" Before I had a micrometer I used some ferrules that were around .54 and just hand turned them to match the hosel.

So to answer your original question, get a ferrule around 1" long with ID of .370 and OD around .52 and you should be good. Your club builder can fine tune the fit with some acetone.

I would ask the person doing the reshafting for you which he prefers (.355 or .370). I would get a bunch of different types and lengths so that you can decide what color, size and length looks the best. I would look at ringed ferrules as well as an option. Some guys like rings on their ferrules and you can chose different color schemes. It is a little more but it might work for you.

I mostly do my own work and like the black ferrules. I like the tight fit of the .355 on the taper tip shaft. I use a rubber mallet to start the ferrule on the shaft and then use a tool designed to seat the ferrule 1.25 inches. Nothing is more annoying than to have a ferrule come off the top of the hosel, which will invariably happen over time, if you use a loose fitting ferrule.

i bought the sames ones the op listed in the top of the topic. i put them on some 355 shafts and mizuno heads. to get them to fit the shaft properly you have to use a hair dryer to heat them up and slide up the tip. they will even tell you that in your invoice to use a hairdryer. definitely friction fit and they are easy to install and great in quality. mine are the same ones other than i have to black stripes in the white ferrule. hope that helps

i spoke with juliana from cell parts and she said that mizuno buys .360 x .545, so i got those. now you're saying that .368 x .550 was a really tight fit.

ferrules are so confusing. can't just make standard ones for all clubs. that would be too easy
