Vijay's back with the Launcher Comp

I just saw some highlights of todays practice round of Byron Nelson's Tourney on the golf channel and Vijay was back hitting his launcher comp. That must make Cleveland real happy considering the new HiBore commercial campaign. Not to mention that David Toms and some other staffers have yet to make the change. I wonder if the 81 last week had anything to do with it? It just kind of surprised me after all of his talk earlier in the year praising his new HiBore driver. It's kinda like the Aaron Baddeley MacGregor commercials about how great the new MacGregor driver is. Oops, he has been playing TaylorMade's r7 all year. But I am sure it's great :)

Cleveland makes a great product, but I personally am not a fan of the Hibore. Maybe a great driver, but the comp was such a good club. I don't know if trying new tech was the best way to denote the comp, instead of upgrading existing tech.

I would also add that the Comp was a superior club for me to the Hi Bore......The shop where I got the Hi Bore said it is the most returned club they've ever sold.....It either fits you perfect, or not at all....

On paper the Hi-Bore is a better driver, but on paper Beta was a better video format too. But there are other considerations to how you hit a driver, and Vij seems to agree with the masses on this one.

 

Cleveland really needs to go another direction.

I can't stand the sound of the hibore. Give me a break, couldn't they muffle that sound. It is by far the loudest most obnoxious sounding driver.

the problem is that this driver was designed to launch it in the 16-18* range with 1900-2400rpm of spin when fit correctly.

 

However when most people see something launch that high they think it's ballooning. I think the driver is a bit ahead of its time. Too many people (including tour players) just don't feel comfortable seeing it launch that high.

Also, its a 340cc head cmon now.

The problem in fact was mentioned above. Cleveland designed this driver for the "distance formula" The driver launches very high with very low spin. However, these tour pros see a window out there that they want their ball to fly through and if it doesnt fit through that visual window then many of them are uncomfortable with it. This is the struggle Cleveland has been having with the hi bore. For most tour pros this combo is only going marginally farther and that new ballflight height is just awkward to look at, so players are not making the switch. I would say that this was truly poor timing on the part of Cleveland to not realease this driver in more quanitity to the tour players at the beginning of the off-season. I think if these guys had a couple months to fine-tune the HiBore there would be a lot more in play. However, between its appearance from the top and its odd looking ballflight, its just hard to get used to.

the hibore has great scope for development. Just think of the head footprint if they get that thing upto 460CC, it'll be massive. As with all innovations it takes some time to perfect

what loft hi bore would i need if i have a launch angle of 18* with a 8.5* r510tp? Would i need a -3.5*?

If your serious and launching at that angle then it is more than likely the swing that is causing a problem. The swing issue must be addressed before you try to get fit for any drivers. I always reccomend checking your swing out before getting fit for any drivers because if you make changes your driver can likely be an improper fit if it was fit under a flawed swing.

I discussed this issue with the cleveland guys on the van, and they said it was most likely because he wants to instill get back the confidence he had last year, and the Comp had alot to do with that.

if you are even slightly interested in trying the hibore, take less loft. i have a 10.5 comp and tested the hibore on the launch monitor and was getting ridiculously low spin rates. To the point where the rep thought i might need an 11.5. Here lies the problem with this club. The "typical numbers" you look for with a launch monitor fit can be thrown out the window. You have to try different lofts and shafts on the range. See the ball flight. With that being said, I came up witha 9.5 w/ v2 75 stiff and could make it work. I'll take the 905r instead. The R is the straightest driver that I have played in three years. Also w/ the V2....the best shaft going in my opinion.

i was just trying to rattle the cage and it worked. scott has an amazing swing was my only point. and i would love to see him take down the tiger! still think it will happen
