Innovex Golf Set To Open New HQ

Sorry if this post is a bit short or poorly written but I’m trying to write it as I watch a hockey game… my team isn’t in it this year but I still try to catch as many games as I can! A guy can’t just watch golf you know…

I’ve got a few notes from the world of golf and then I thought I’d spend a bit of time talking about wedges. We had a good wedge email today so I will do my best to answer some commonly asked wedge questions.

First up… our 2005 Golf Company Of The Year is set to open a new headquarters. The company will be offering free driver fittings, a demo sale, a free gift and pony rides… ok the pony rides part is a lie but it promises to be a great day. The official opening is set for next Wednesday (May 17th) and you can find more information HERE.

Speaking of Innovex Golf… the company now offers custom engraving on their CFD driver. This is a great chance to put your name or company logo on a club. There is a small upcharge for this custom work but it’s still a great deal. Check out the Innovex Golf website for more details.

I want to spend a bit of time talking about wedges without getting too technical. I get lots of questions at my shop from people looking to add a few wedges to their bag. There are a few questions I hear all the time so let’s talk a bit about them…

Should I match my wedges to my current set?

This one is really up to you but most people prefer more of a blade style wedge. Today’s cavity backed irons (assuming you play cavity backs) are designed to be forgiving… thus the often extreme perimeter weighting. Let’s stop and think about it… are you more likely to miss-hit a 3 iron or a lob wedge? 99.9% of you will say a 3 iron because it is longer and has less loft. This is where you’re going to need perimeter weighting. Most players want more control and feel with their wedges and prefer to go with more of a blade style. More weight behind the ball = more control. Another thing to consider… a lot of the additional wedges that are offered in sets come one way. You usually can’t get different sole grinds, groove technology and bounces. Looking at “non-matching” wedges gives you the freedom to really customize your set up.

What bounce is best for me?

I think a lot of mid to high handicappers get really hung up on bounce and it’s funny because not many actually know what it is. To keep it really simple… a wedge with more bounce is less apt (yes… I just used the word apt) to dig into the ground or sand. Lots of companies make each loft in different bounces… have a look at some of the wedges on the rack next time and you’ll probably see the bounce stamped on the club. So which one is right for you? Consider two things… where you play and how you swing. If you play a lot of courses with softer sand and fairways you’ll probably need more bounce on your wedges. If you play a lot of courses with tighter fairways and harder sand then look for wedges with lower bounce. If you’re the kind of golfer that gets out to a lot of different courses then you probably should lean towards more bounce… it is the safer choice for the average golfer. The second thing to consider is your swing. Have your local pro or golf shop employee to have a look at your swing path. Steep swingers might want to consider more bounce. Your steep angle of attack may lead to you digging your wedges. If your swing is a bit flatter you should have a look at something with a bit less bounce. These are just some simple guidelines… get someone that understands bounce to help you pick your wedges.

What lofts should I get?

Ok kids… time for some simple math. First thing you need to look at is the gap you’re trying to fill. Your pitching wedge will be somewhere between 44 and 48 degrees. Most golfers want to fill the gap between their pitching wedge and 60 degrees. Now let’s look at your bag… how many wedges can you afford to have while staying within the 14 club maximum? Let’s look at my bag as an example. My Cleveland TA3 pitching wedge has a loft of 48 degrees. My current bag make up allows me to have two wedges. I need to fill a 12 degree gap (60 degrees - 48 degrees) with two clubs. The best wedge set up for me (assuming I want to fill my gaps equally) would be choosing a 54 degree wedge and a 60 degree wedge. These two clubs would give me equal coverage and would allow me to make most shots. Again… this is just a guideline. Try a bunch of different lofts and see what works for you. Some golfers might judge wedges by their distances… they’ll fill the gap with a “100 yard wedge” and a “75 yard wedge”. The biggest thing you want to avoid is having two wedges that do the same thing. Would you play two fairway woods that do exactly the same thing? Probably not.

So there you have it… a few things to keep in mind when considering some new wedges. I’ll try to touch on grooves and grinds another time. Thanks again for all of the email and support! Talk to you tomorrow….
