Where Do You Stand?

When Others Are Hitting Their Driver
Just curious. If you take a 180* half circle from facing his back to facing his face, I've had people say (At every position on that half circle), "Please don't stand there." I'm talking about a position of around 15 yards away, not up close. WTF......Should I go hide in the Men's Room back in the clubhouse? :)

Growing up I was taught not to stand behind someone on the tee box. I mean with their back facing you.

I know some people don't like you to stand behind them (line of play), though I see that quite a bit.

At 15 yards though, I could care less where anyone is (as long as he's not talking on his cell phone)!!

All I ask is for no one to move while I'm hitting my drives since I have very wide level of vision, around 180*. I don't care where they stand as long as they don't move or stand in front of my ball while I'm trying to crank a drive hopefully to at least 300 yds away, NOT! LOL! :)

As long as they arn't in my swingplane, ball path, talking and a reasonably still then I'm fine wherever they are.

But there's this old guy at our club who has been the topic of many discussions, luckily I havn't played with him, but I've heard the stories. He will not tolerate anyone that he can see when he is about to hit, if he can see you he will go nuts, but even if he can't he will say he can and tell you off, you must be really far away from him, like 15metres for him to keep his cool. He drives a cart by himself and always tees off first, and once he has teed off he will get in his cart and drive off to his ball, without waiting for the others to tee off. A friend of mine was playing with him and was sick of being told to move several times on each hole that on one hole the guy said, 'I can see you', so my friend moved, after he moved the guy looked at him meanly, making my friend move again, so he walked behind the bushes at the back of the tee box, as the guy took his backswing he said, 'can you see me now?' The old man went absolutely mental at him and the rest of the group was in hysterics.

I just realised how crap that story must have sounded, oh well, no way I'm un-doing all that typing.

I just make it a point to stand out of their vision. As far as I am concerned I don't care where anyone stands when i am swinging. When I first moved to the Chicago area, I played with a regular group evey Saturday and they didn't care where they stood and they talked while you were swinging. So I can handle just about anything except maybe golf equipment falling from the sky!

You know what the worst is?

When you're in a good group and everybody is laughing and having a good time and then just as you set up and get ready to swing everybody just stops and there's total silence. I would just assume they kept talking...as long as they're not yelling at me or throwing a ball down at my feet.

That silence is louder than their talking....in my head anyways.

The only real issue I have is when somebody is in my line (front or back) when I'm putting. A lot of people don't understand that this is bad etiquette and they think they're just getting a read. It really screws up my focus because I'm thinking....at any minute this joker is going to move....any second now....ok maybe he won't move....hmmm, I wonder if he'll move while I'm making my stroke....then I hit a poor putt and all I can do is blame myself for not asking him to move.

Sometimes it's nice to have an excuse :)

If someone is standing on my line of play, all it takes is a very small move to make me think I might hit them. My peripheral vision is not that good. I prefer people to stand at a 45 degree angle and be still. It makes me nervous to be swinging a golf club and not know where everyone is. I don't want to hit anyone.

As long as someone isn't too close to me and they stay still, I don't mind where they are. I once played with this guy that whenever I was putting he would stand directly behind me but a few yards away and as I would start my backstroke he would start walking to his ball. Drove me nuts! Simp
