What extra sucks about the cholla is he will be pulling barbs out for years to come. Some needles will break off and won't be accessible so you have to wait till they come to the surface.

Being that I am from the sunless shores of the great lakes region of our fare country I have no idea what cacti do to the human physiology. (I mean in addition to the 1263 tiny holes he has in him of course) If that happened to me i would be concerned for some type of nasty cactus juice/poison coursing through my veins! The great irony of course would have been to serve him up a shot or two of tequila to kill the pain. although he may not find it real funny and decide to hug you or something. Glad to hear he is OK.

Did the ones on his clothes go all the way through and pierce his skin? I can't imagine the agony this must have caused. Why can't you just pull them off? Excuse the ignorance on the subject. The only cactus we have in NJ are the kind you buy in the supermarket in a little flower pot to put on your desk and water once a month. Any ball I hit within 10 feet of a cactus is considered "lost."

For those unfamiliar with the Cholla aka Jumping cactus. It is the absolute worst cactus to get stuck with. The barbs on the Cactus are very loosley attached to the plant and stick to skin and clothing very easily...hence the name jumping cactus.

They have barbs similar to fish hooks and once they get embeded into the skin are very difficult to get out since they are also very fragile.

Typically what will happen if not removed carefully is the stem will break off and leave the fishook portion embedded in the skin which causes imense discomfort and there have been reported cases of the cactus starting to grow inside the skin if not removed properly.

Wow, thats just unreal. Glad to hear hes going to be OK. Never mess with Cholla, as said they are like a fishhook with a barb. Imagine the pain he went through getting those pulled out. My buddie went to the hospital when he just had one embedded, cant imagine 30 or so.

Ran into a cactus myself one day after looking for a ball in the desert, but didn't have one of thos jumping chollas, thank goodness. Ouch!
