Want to deaden the sound of your Taylor Made driver?

Here is a great solution...
Now you all know I have gone over the edge. A buddy of mine taught me this one, and it works. If you like the old sound of the 510 df from TM. It had a crack or thud compared to the larger heads of today. Here is a good answer. Go to Home Depot or Lowes and pick up some of these rubber washers from Hillman. The sizes are in the Pics. The smaller ones worked for me. Add them between the head and the screws and you will find zero weight gain to speak of and a deadening of the sound.

Ho's dream come true. :)

IIRC it was on either GEA or Freegolfinfo where someone wrote the USGA and asked about the legality of the washers. It went along the lines that "it is not the same club we tested" + "it is not for weighting purposes (like lead tape)". A bit too picky if you ask me. I was ready to buy the washers before I read about it.

Hitting my Xdrive 390 Pro spec has spoiled me with feel all over again. My R7TP has long been seperated from the stock TP graphics 73xct Diamana. Both are in my basement gathering dust. I'm just too lazy to list it and figure out shipping costs.

But if you put hotmelt in it, it won't be the same club either?! Sounds odd to me.

Well, some use it to deaden the sound as well ;)

And results in a deadened sound/feel, which by the alleged response by the USGA on another forum, results in the club being different by the one tested. Shoving cotton in a head is also done more to change sound than weight, so would also result in an illegal head . . . allegedly. :crazy2:

(i don't think so)

I think I'm going to try this. I don't play in any USGA tournaments and even if I did there is no telling that my retail driver might be accidentally hot anyhow. I think its a little rediculous that the USGA be concerned with a couple of rubber washers. I sincerly doubt they'll make the ball go farther. I bet if you asked them again you'd get a different answer.

Best sound/feel is the R500 Tour, R510TP, R540XD-TP, R510. TM really sacraficed sound/feel when they went o MWT (weighted screw) drivers.

Long live the R500 Series Drivers above.

The R500, the R540 XD TP (tour) and of course many of the R510 TP's are all tour clubs. Most of them have been internally weighted with hot melt. Hot melt helps the sound. So I agree that all of those R500 Series tour drivers sound great, but it's because they've been hot-melted.

I have reservations about this, but the whole issue is avoided if you use the washers to make small weight adjustments. Say you have a 2 gram TM weight, and you want it to be 2.5 grams. Use the washer.

That said, tour players pop the FT-3 chevron to change the sound. No rule against that, although you could argue that the chevron is simply decorative and that removing it is a weight adjustment. My advice is that you add hotmelt to adjust the weight slightly, you add cotton to adjust the weight slightly, you pop the chevron to adjust the weight slightly. You simply say (with a straight face) that any change made to the head was to adjust the weight. The USGA can be very rigid with rules written when heads were solid, persimmon, and about the size of a very small rodent...

when i was playing an r7 i used a rubber band around the 2 gram weights like joe suggested. it made a huge difference in sound. much easier then washers imo.
