Lie Angles Revisited

Well - we're back on mats after the great New England deluge of '06. Noticed a lot of "range hair" on my irons to the toe side of center.

 

I spec'd for 2* up over the winter (dynamic and static). But I've been playing standard lies. the thing is, my misses are not to the right. Isn't that what I should expect from too flat lie angles in the irons? If anything, my misses tend to be pulls/hooks to the left.

 

The physical evidence says I should go upright some, but will that exacerbate the "lefts"? I recognize that it's a swing (arms/shoulders get to fast), but with two little kids and not a lot of time to work on it, I don;t want to get worse to get better, if that;s wjhat messing with the lie angles will cause . . . .

I'm not a fitter, but I can tell you what I think/have experienced...

 

1) don't know if you'll see a big ball flight problem off mats b/c it's my impression that the toe/heel digging cause the mishit when the lie angle is off...i think the mats will hide this. so if you measured for 2 degrees upright, it's probably right.

 

2) one think i experienced in a recent fitting (and read about on this site, I think) is that if the club is even slightly approaching the ball from the outside it'll show up on the toe.

 

anyway, i'm in the fitting process again after failing miserably with the mp-60s from golfmasters in walpole. getting new irons from stow acres and, surprisingly, they have been GREAT to deal with.

TJW - yeah, mats stink. Not a good experience in Walpole, huh? I might take my irons over to Fore Seasons in Hingham. I'm pretty sure I'll have them bent up 2* and see how it goes. Haven't decided about the wedges yet. I suppose they can always be bent back. It's strange, b/c I've always conceived of my swing as kind of flat, but my irons need ot go upright. seems counterintuitive.

 

Actually, I suppose I've always fought a little bit of an over the top move (probably worse now that I fight hooks if I stay inside). I'd imagine that coming over the top in order to get straight down the line to avoid a hook would cause you to come in kinda upright, making the irons look too flat . . .
