positives and negatives for me. i have the non-tour 9.5deg with stiff. no joke, this is the longest driver i have ever hit. easily 20 yards longer on average than my previous, a wilson pd5 with tour platform 27.3 mainly because of the increase in rollout. the wilson was a 10 deg but i also hit it higher with the fuji shaft compared to the stock fuji in the macgregor. i believe my ss is in the mid 90s and i have hit several of the longest drives in the past 10 years in recent months - several over 290 yds which for me is fantastic.

the negatives are i get some very wild slices/hooks seemingly out of nowhere. plus im not crazy about the softball bat sound. at this point i attribute the control problems to the stock fuji shaft. i'm much more comfortable with something that feels like more flex in the tip, allowing me to feel the head throughout the swing. the 27.3 feels great to me. with the mac fuji, its like the bend profile is completely different and i cant tell where the head is. in fact i thought it was a difference in swingweight but it turned out that the nvg2 came in at d-3 compared to d-2 for the pd5.

i'm trying to decide whether or not to reshaft (probably with a 26.3 because of the greater availability and supposed lower spin compared to the 27.3) but don't want to spend $100 to find that the lower flight and subsequent roll is because of the stock shaft. once you start seeing more distance its hard to go back.

so i may keep tweaking my swing to get more consistency.

regards

I got an NVG2 (regular version) about two weeks ago. It is an astoundingly good driver. It is longer than any driver I've tried (and I've tried most of them!). It is also very very forgiving. Even the stock shaft is very good. I usually end up replacing the stock shafts on my driver, but so far, this one is doing the job.

I haven't had it long enough to see how versatile it is, but I hit it straight or fade it without much trouble.

It's one of the very best drivers on the market right now.

I just got the NVG2 yesterday. Very excited to try it. I keep hearing how hot the face is. I'm also intrigued by the Quadra Action shaft. We'll see soon enough! I got the 10.5º with stiff QA stock shaft. Hopefully I choose right, as this is a tester club and had to hazard a guess on the specs.

Have you hit it yet? Please share. Thanks.

Sorry, I haven't yet. Been nursing a sore shoulder injured in a recent car accident. I'm doing my best to behave and not swing a club until this weekend. I went to the range last night and could only bring my putter with! Uggh! :crazy2: I'll keep ya posted. I ripped the grip off it last night. That thing stunk! ;) (Literally.) I couldn't stand the smell of it! I'm gonna re-grip it tonight.

  • 2 weeks later...

How do you like your MacTec NVG2 driver? Tour or regular? Distance, accuracy, forgiveness????

Thanks.

I had posted these results from a Flightscope launch monitor session 1 month ago. One of the drivers I tested (and had NO inkling of ever buying)was the MacTec NVG2...but the results speak for themselves:

==================================================

Just wanted to post that I finally got on a launch monitor w/my Hibore over the weekend. BTW, it's shafted with the V2 - stiff flex, 10.5 deg.

To preface, I really liked the Hibore...it was about the straightest driver I had owned...and I had many. Both tour-issued and non-tour. I had my share of long drives with it...but during my practice sessions, I thought that after the apex of its flight, it seemed to "lose steam" and all but drop out of th sky. For a couple of weeks, I just chalked it up to my eye not being used to the higher ballflight. I told myself that this is the way it was supposed to behave.

Finally, after much doubt...I went to a reputable place for a fitting on a launch monitor ( Stony Hill Golf of CT) in CT.

Before the guy even looked at the numbers...he saw how high the ball was going and said "Is that the typical ballflight with the Hibore?". I said "yes"....he said "that's WAY too high....you can't be getting any roll out of it, right?" (my launch angle was 16*)

Well, the monitor confirmed my hunch...that the Hibore was spinning the hell out of the ball.

My avg SS is: between 107-108

The Hibore was spinning the thing 4000 RPM's!!

Also, this was using 2 different tee heights. Same story....too much spin.

The fitter then gave me a LOT of drivers to hit, including:

1. Ping G5 9.5 w/NV65 - S

2. Ping G5 7.5 w/Graffalloy Blue - S

3. FT-3 Neutral 9.5 - w/Graffalloy Blue - S

4. FT-3 Neutral 9.5 - w/NV65 - S

5. MacTec 9.5 - Stock Fuji Qudra - S

6. MacTec 10.5 - Stock Fuji Quadra - S

7. Cleveland Ti 460 - w/I think the stock Fuji - S

8. Titleist 905R 9.5 - V2 65 - S

9. Titleist 905R 8.5 - V2 65 - S

...maybe a couple other variations of the above w/diff shafts, etc.

....anyway....the final 3 came down to the:

1. Titleist 905R 9.5 degree - V2 - S

2. Ping 7.5 w/Graffalloy Blue - S

3. MacTec NVG2 w/stock Fuji Quadra - S

...I was very much wanting to select the Titleist or the Ping being that I never thought of playing the Macgregor driver....but the numbers didn't lie. I was hitting low-spin bombs with it...nearly 25 yards further than my average (on 12 swings) with the Hibore. My average spin was around 2800, but never above 3000. The Titleist was around 3200 or so.....and the ping was about the same...although the mishits on the Ping were the worst of the 3. So it then came down to the Titleist or the MacTec. The fitter could see I really wanted to get the Titleist (again, I think I was thinking which I'd RATHER have in my bag.....rather than would fit me best....SIGH, I know...I'm a ho). But when I kept switching back/forth between the 2....the MacTec outperformed it by a little every single time. The "smash factor" was the highest with the Macgregor.

....I ended up getting the NVG2. We'll see how it does out there on the course. But I can say, I'm glad I actually got on the machine because I probably would have kept the Hibore around thinking it was just my eye that wasn't used to the ballflight.

Just thought I'd share my experience.

Are the rest of you guys that have seen the light like I have teeing the ball down a little lower with the NVG2?

I find myself having better success with the shorter tees 2" with this driver than the longer tees.

Watch out for skymarks if you are still using the longer tees! The shorter tees have done the trick for me with this thing. I still like mine and I should have it in the bag a little longer than my r7 460 lasted, which was all of about 9 days :idhitit:
