Easiest Way to Remove a Graphite Shaft

i have tried using a heat gun a few times and i just end up melting the shaft about an inch into the bore. Its not too big of a deal to bore it out and then go but i would like to know the ways you guys do it. Does anyone use a small torch? tips?

What type of head are you working on. I have pulled tons of shafts, just using a heat gun and have never heard of one melting. are you concentrating the heat in just one spot, or are you moving it all around the hosel. I find it works easiest when i heat the hosel in a 360 slowly and let the heat sink in and radiate before trying to pull. Pulling a graphite shaft is not something you want to hurry. I don't like using a torch, as it concentrates a large amount of heat in a small area, and if someone inexperienced is using it you stand a good chance of blueing the metal or damaging the shaft. A good person to ask for more about this would be Je Kwok. He's the best around.

Off course you need to explain it to us what exactly you did and what type of head.

If you can melt a shaft while it's still in the hosel, most likely you've burn the head too.

Patient, let the heat travel and zip in slowly and a good puller is a must too!

Torch is the last thing you should have in your hand when it come to a wood. You better had a lot of experiences if you want to use a torch.

it was a graffaloy blue coming out of a cleveland launcher 400 head. basically the shaft had heated up nicely but the epoxy hadn't loosened up enough and when i went to twist it out it just twisted the shaft. I haven't used a puller before. This was the second time i have tried to remove a shaft from a wood.

You are telling us that you try to heat the head w/ graphite shaft and without a puller you try to twist it off?

There is no way you can pull a Graffaloy blue graphite shaft without a puller.

Joe is right again of course. You don't EVER want to try and twist the head off a graphite shaft. You need to invest in a shaft puller if you seriously intend to continue pulling your own shafts. You can either invest in one, or keep paying to buy new shafts. The other option, is to take it to your local repair shop. I know I charge 20 dollars at mine if the customer just wants to swap out shafts ad doesn't want the shaft spined or anything special. YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE PROPER TOOLS TO WORK ON YOUR OWN CLUBS.

i know, when i actually think about it twisting it is pretty damn stupid. Im gonna pick up a puller from Golfsmith. I wasn't too upset when i did this because i wasnt going to reuse the shaft. Thanks for the help guys.

One of the best shaft pullers on the market is a JB Jr. I have one in my shop and love it.

It needs stable platform and shaft puller for sure .... and never twist the shaft tip during heating and removal process... the graphite fibres will be unwind or open. I made this mistake before.
