3 wood doom to boom

I remain a high handicapper. I am getting better, but lack the time to put into this game to get drastically better in a reasonable amount of time.

I have always had a heckuva time hitting a fairway wood off of any lie. I was horrific with it. Actually, last time I played, outside of the tee box, I didn't hit anything bigger than a 5-iron, just so I would enjoy my day more. The other day I was at the range and it was pretty empty so I figured I would take out the 3 wood and see what happens, see if I can work out any kinks. I proceeded to hit it great. Even when I didn't catch it perfect, it still would have been a pretty playable shot. I even put it down and moved to other clubs for a while, then back to it, wondering if it was a fluke. Still hit it well. We'll see if I keep the same success the next time out.

I had some lessons last year and while I got much better with my irons, never even worked on a fairway wood with my instructor. Maybe my better overall stroke has helped me.

Anyone else ever experience anything like this?

I actually saw a drastic improvement in my fairway wood abilities after watching the Big Break III. They were all hitting fairway woods all the time and I tried to adopt their smooth tempos, etc. Before I would rarely use a fairway wood, opting instead to lay up. But after adopting a smoother tempo, these things started going dead straight, I put a 5 wood in play...but have since opted for a hybrid (more consistent distances).

I'm a mid/high capper and after 10 years I still can't figure the darn things out (FW woods), like spk74 I'm playing hybrids because I hit mine straight and to consistant distances. I'd love to carry a 14 or 15 degree wood for those occasional 225+ shots so if you pinpoint "the secret" please let us know .

I believe I now have an overall easier swing and smoother tempo. Other than that, I can't pinpoint anything.

 

Still wondering...anyone else ever encounter anything like this with any club? Where it sort of works itself out without you even really working on it?

It was just a mental thing, it's happened to me before with my 4+ wood... I was snap hooking it on the course and then i got to the range and hit it great..
