adding weight to a putter...

how do you do it, is it possible?
i have posted a question about the heavy putter and what people think of it, success, drawbacks, etc...I tried one today and was automatic from 6-7 ft and in, but have heard that from longer distance it's difficult to dial in. I wanted to know if anyone had ever tried adding weight to their putter, ie lead tape or some other form, I have a 34" white steel 2-ball mallet. I'm going to have an inch cut off, but wanted to know if anyone had ever experimented with this, success, notes, advice, etc? I figured i would putt the lead tape in the hollow area underneath the alignment disks...in any event, please don't be shy and let me know what you think...thanks folks...

You can mix tungsten powder with black epoxy and fill in the two cavitys on the bottow. You let it dry and then sand it flush. It looks good and adds quite a bit of weight. You could also add sand to the shaft and cork it. It would make your putter feel very similar to the heavy putter and the sand is easy to remove if you don't like it.

I think weight in the space under the alignment balls would work great. I think you would probably want to favor the bottom side to get the weight as far out as possible. You might also look at front-to-back position. If the weight is farther in the back (a la Cameron Futura or Phantom) it should stabilize the putter head; the farther back from the shaft join, the more stabilization effect you should feel. But this depends on your putting stroke - a straighter stroke would favor back weight and a center-shafted putter; open-square-closed stroke might not want the weight so far back. A commercial example of this would be something like the Monza Corza putter.

You may not like the way it looks, but you can also experiment with weights on the bottom side "wings" of your mallet. I guess you could drill and tap for a pair of Taylor-Made weights! Having more weight at heel and toe would greatly increase MOI/stability as well, with the same caveats as extra weight at the back. This would be like one of those adjustable weight Yes! putters.

I used to use a 2-ball White Hot Blade and I've tried added a little weight at the back of the cavity, but I have to admit it didn't really feel any different to me. I think it's hard to add that much mass using lead tape (something like 1/2 gm/inch, right? 15 grams would be 30"!).

These days, I've been using a Hogan/Bettinardi Big Ben. If you've seen one of these before, it's hard to miss the honeycomb holes drilled sideways through the head, perpendicular to the face. It wouldn't be hard to tap those holes and have an easy way to screw-in additional weight. I haven't tried this because I've been pretty happy with the head weight.

I can tell you that I tried adding weight to my putter because I often go back and forth from very fast greens to slower greens and was really having trouble and wanted to see if adding weight would get my feel back. I am 5'8" and so most putters I find are made for people taller than I am. My ideal putter is about 32" in length so this requires a lot of tinkering with headweight and shaft combinations. At this length the head has to be very heavy or the overall weight will be so light that I have to take an extremely long stroke.

After adding the weight at varying intervals(approximately 20 strips at 4" each- heaviest, and 5 strips at 4" -lightest),vwhat I found was a problem with consistency on the longer putts on slower greens. Sometimes, I would hit putts that went 10 feet by the hole and with grain being an issue here in Florida things only got more complex. I then considered that maybe the swingweight was getting into the E range so I added tape to the shaft below the grip to counterbalance and noticed that this seemed to increase the amount of disparity for my distance control. To me distance control is everything and when I started decelerating my stroke, I got into serious trouble even on the short ones. At that point the added weight was a bad thing.

Moral for me is that manufacturers go thru a lot of R&D to test this stuff and get the proper shaft for the weight of Putter Head and Shaft Length and since we are talking about relatively short distances for a putter to hit the ball, I want it stiff enough so that I don't load the shaft so to speak. I am glad that I experimented because it taught me the basics about overall weight and swingweight for a putter. All it did was cost me a few shots and a little lead tape but from now on, I will probably consult with someone I deem to be an experienced local clubmaker who has the tools to make me what I want.
