Reminiscing about golf as a youngster

Those were the days *sigh*

A few minutes ago at 6:30pm, I was just about to head out to the range to hit a bucket, but since I don't have a defined goal, it would be a waste of time (trying to figure out whether my 3wd really balloons doesn't work well with range balls).

It made me think back when I played on the high school team (I'm now a grad student), I lived in a town of 30,000 in southeast Minnesota that strangely had 3.5 golf courses. The 9-hole muni I grew up on was ALWAYS bustling. There were 12 of us on the team. No matter what time of day (even now at 6:30pm), I could bike over to the course, get my bag from the locker room, and one of them could always be found. There was a mini-tour pro who would come by in the evening - we'd often play together and he is solely reponsible for my affinity for Titleist. When it got dark, we would hang out on the putting green which actually had holes cut and putt for money, 50 cents/hole. The green was lit by an oddly placed streetlamp between the clubhouse & green as well as the bar/dining/wedding wing of the clubhouse. I would normally walk 27 holes/day - it's no wonder I'm not as consistent as I used to be (I can play better, but how much is due to equipment/strength?).

Junior memberships were only $72/year (eventually got up to $120 before I left) so we all had one. I would have been able to load up a dozen golf balls on the first tee around 8pm and see if my 3wd shaft was in fact too tip weak. But here in a suburb of Cincinnati, I can't afford the $700-$1000 memberships, especially since I'm in Atlanta during the school year.

Those were the days *sigh*.

im livin it now and after reading your post i realised how lucky i am not to in college yet or stuck behind some desk...i have until september 4th off from school and boy am i gonna make use of it!!
