My clubs are too light

Recommended Posts

I currently play Titleist ZBlades and I have 6.0 rifle shafts in them. The shafts are half an inch short and I wam wondering if there is any way to make the clubs heavier, because I feel as though I will be able to work the ball and control my ball flight better.

BTW I am a scratch, collegiate player and I think this may help take me to a higher level.

Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks.

Also, can you further explain tip weighting?

Basically, small weights that fit in the end of the shafts which can be used to manipulate the swingweight of the club. They have the advantage of giving a cleaner appearance to your irons as you cannot see them, but obviously you will have to disassemble your set to have them fitted. Lead tape looks ugly to some, but it's still the easiest way to adjust swingweight without any intrusive work on your clubs.

Well, add as much weight as feels good. For every 1/2" of clublength shortened you lose 3 swingweight points ( example factory 5 iron 37.5", swingweight d-2, same club 37" would swingweight to c-9), so you would need to add 6 grams of lead ( 1 sw point= 2 grams) to each club to get them back to factory standard sw. Personally I like most of my clubs to come in around d4-d5, again, whatever feels good.

Oh yeah, don't worry about promoting draws/fades. You would have to add so much lead tape to mess with the flight that you wouldn't want to play with them that heavy.

Any tips on how much lead tape is needed and the best way to put it on as to not force draws or fades.

I'm curious about this as well. I keep losing my tape strips on my driver, I've even tried putting a little bit of superglue on them, and they still come off after a round or two.

Where are you putting the lead tape?

I use the tape to try out a swingweight change...after I settle on where I want my number I pull the shaft and tip weight them to that number. Heavier swingweights have helped me tremendously with my tempo and change of direction at the top.

bottom trailing edge. I can't bring myself to stick them on the top!

Get a swingweight scale and match your clubs if you are going to "dial them in." Once they feel consistent from club to club, you will only need to focus on your swing.
