Longer shaft = flatter lie?

It will be upright by 1* at +1/2".

In order to play at standard lie, you will need to flatten it by 1*.

However, before you do flatten them, get fit dynamcally and see where you're striking the sole on the ground just to make sure you need to go down. Who knows you might need your club 1* up. :idhitit:

Hope that helps.

I had a clubfitter suggest I get my clubs 1/2" longer than standard. I have been fit before with standard length and the lie of a 6 iron at 62 degrees. If I go 1/2" longer, how would that change my lie angle?

As mentioned, OEMs generally use a 1 degree increment in lie angle. Some use 1/2 a degree from the 6 or 5 iron down to the 1. At 1/2" over, you should pick up 3 swingweight points. That's just enough for most players to feel, and depending on your level of strength and club control, you may end up using that additional swingweight feel to load the shaft a little more, which will usually produce a little more droop at impact (droop dynamically flattens the lie angle of the club at impact compared to the lie angle at address). A little more droop might offset the slightly more upright lie angle that results from extending.

I would always recommend just hitting them for a few buckets at the range and see what the flight tendency is, without trying to make any adjustments or changes. If they seem to have a little draw bias, go ahead and get them flattened.

I agree with the two previous posts, in terms of testing the clubs before flattening the lie . . . assuming that you are buying standard clubs and then reshafting or extending the length. However, my experience is that extending the length will almost certainly cause the clubs to play more upright. So if you are special ordering them, then I would go ahead and order them 1* flat, because that is more than likely what you will end up needing. It would then be just as easy to bend them back to standard, if need be, as it would be to bend a standard set flat. And, in all probability, you won't have to, if you order them a degree flat.

The reason that I don't think that the swingweight change will affect droop that much is this. There are essentially three ways to increase swingweight (not counting counter-weighting) -- change the length of the shaft, change the weight of the shaft, add weight to the clubhead. I would agree that adding weight to the clubhead might have an impact on droop. However, adding length to the shaft does not make it more flexible, as you might assume. If anything it stiffens it. Since it is tapered, and not parallel, you are adding length at the stiffest portion, the butt end. Oftentimes that increased stiffness is pretty much offset by the additional swingweight, due to a very slight increase in swingspeed. But not enough to significantly increase droop.

My experience has always been that there is an inverse relationship between club length and lie angle. If you lengthen the shaft by 1/2", it will almost always change you dynamic lie angle by almost a full degree.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
