tell me what you think....
I have been thinking about this for along time and I want your opinions on the "policy" a insturctor friend from my winter job has for doing club fittings:

Basically he won't fit anybody, until he gives them a lesson. The thing is he doesn't charge them for the first lesson and they will only pay for the fitting. I told him it seem rather weird to me but here's how he explained it to me. If he was to fit someone who has like a lowsey golf swing to start off with and fits clubs to that swing, if the person was to improve there swing in the future and go to get fit by someone else in the future. Then with their new improved swing then the clubs would be way off, and if the person doesn't know much about golf or the golf swing they will think oh that guy who fit me (who i won't mention his name) a couple of years ago said these were done right, he must not know what he was doing. Which in tern make him look bad.

So like I said he gives them a lesson to fit clubs to a better golf swing.

I heard that and thought it made alot of sense for him because then it makes him look better.

I just wanted the opinion of you guys and see what you thought of it.

Good idea since it can help promote more exposure to available lessons.

Personally, if I was told that I can not get a fitting without a lesson, I would think he does not know how to fit clubs and is trying to get my swing to match the standard set lying in the back.

I think the better approach would be to provide free fittings and adjustments if that person chooses to take lessons through him.

A good fitter is not only understand how to fit and all his tools and stuff he carry, but also need to understand a swing mechanics.

The same thing w/ teaching pro, they need to understand both.

To find some one who are very good in both aspect is not easy, it's out there but rare IMO!

The best case is to find a club fitter or teaching pro who work together and understand at least the basic of both world and their motivation of their business is w/ a good faith to make some one a better golfer and at the same make an honest money.

This guys can't be that good if they are not concentrate on one job, but yet their success can't go that far if they don't understand the other side of it. So basic knowledge is definitely important for both of this guys.

my 2 cents!

Joe

I think that makes a lot of sense but it also depends on who/the caliber of player the person is... if a person is just learning the game and will be taking lessons it would not make sense to do any fitting before because you may have to re-do it a few times as they go... having said that... checking the specs to make sure the set they are learning with is "consistent" is important so they can see some consistency and or progress throught their set as well as their learning process

i think the guy sounds like a great club fitter is looking for the custumer more than himself. "do good things, and good things will happen for you"

i went to get new rifles shafts earlier in the year. i wanted to bring my flight down. the guy watched me hit a few balls, and put me on the camera and said my problem was my hands were behind the club head at impact and the shafts were fine. he said if i worked on this and came back and still wanted new shafts he would do it. i haven't been back because this was all i needed.

I love hearing stories like that. :idhitit:

What's his name, store, and location. Perhaps you can drum up a little more business for him!

Guys like that are few and far between, they're better people than they are buisness men. My clubbuilder / golf shop owner (Bob's Golf Westheimer @ Voss in Houston) is the same way. When I went in to buy my irons over Christmas one of his friends was there begging him to buy a set of X tours. He said you can't hit them, I'm not going to sell them to you. Either get better or go buy them from someone else. This poor guy even offered to pay $100 over the sticker, but Bob still wouldn't budge!
