Review Titleist 905S

Recommended Posts

What I call the straight bomber...
I've had the 905S for a while now, and I have seen both the good times and the bad times with it and thus I feel compelled to give a complete review.

I can tell you right now that it is VERY easy to lose distance with this club, nd it is probably THE most demanding driver 400cc's and over.

Distance: This is not by anymeans the longest driver on the market, however I would say it is in the top 10. If I absolutely catch one right on the screws I have yet to find a driver to even rival it in distance (that was until I did the test shown below). Again this is testing different clubs against something I have complete confidence in and I will do my best to factor that in. I play a 44.5" shaft (NV 75) tipped to length and fully inserted. On MR. Launch Monitor, I was averaging about 2-3 mph more club head speed (approx 124 avg.) with this than what I was testing it against (905R, R7 425, FT-3, X-Speed, G5). Ball speeds were almost equal staright across the board and factoring in all mis hits and abolute perect strikes the X-speed came out on top and the 905S came out on the bottom (by about 3 mph). The only problem witht he other drivers (only 905S and x-speed excluded) were extremely high spin rates (highest was with R7 425 with a highest spin rate of 5100 rpms (insane I know)). All clubs tested were completely stock all in a loft at or near to 8.5°. The longest balls came from the X-speed, then the 905S, then the 905R, then the FT-3, then r7 425.

Accuracy: This is the easy category, the 905S is unrivaled in workability and total accuracy.

Feel: Solid as can be, almost like hitting a golf ball with an old persimmon wood. Its absolutely perfect in my opinion.

Overall: I'm going to stick with my 905S for a while, its just too accurate to let go. When I start playing more competitively (spelling?) I will move to an easier to hit driver so that I can still get it in play on off days, but for now the 905S has the best combo of distance and accuracy that I ahve ever played. That said, I would like to try the 905R in a 7.5 with a V2 65X so se if I can get my spin rates down and if I can do that the accuracy lost will be more than made up for in overall distance.

Any of you have a review of the 905S?

good review, thanks! Would you mind posting the launch angle, spin rate and ball speed for each of the drivers you tested.

I was surprised to see the 905S was 3mph down on the others. They should all be relatively similar given the same COR.

Your swing speed is in another league to mine. My numbers were 109mph, 13.5deg launch, 3100rpm spin and 155mph ball speed. (averaged over 20 shots on the monitor).

I love the club. I love the feeling you get when you "nut" one off the middle. The flat, boring trajectory is great.

I think what may ahve attributed to the slightly lower ball speeds from the 905S because of the few mishits I hadw ith each driver (905S is the least forgiving of the group)

Here are the numbers (or what I remember of them)

(1) 905R

Swing Speed: 122

Ball Speed: 185.22

Launch Angle: 14°

RPM: 3700

(2) X-Speed

Swing speed: 122

Ball Speed: 186.562

Launch Angle: 14.5°

RPM: 3000

(3) 905S

Swing Speed: 124

Ball Speed: 183.67

Launch Angle: 13°

RPM: 2900

(4) FT-3

Swing Speed: 121

Ball Speed: 184.1

Launch Angle: 15°

RPM: 3900

(5) r7 425

Swing Speed: 123

Ball speed: 183.73

Launch Angle: 13.7°

RPM: 4300

All numbers are averages.

(1) I would like this alot if I could get the spin and launch angle down a bit.

(2)This thing is an absolute bomber, If I were in a long drive league, this would be one of my considerations

(3) My trusty old 905S, See First Post

(4) I really liked the numbers I got (actually only the ball speed) it was just way to light of a head.

(5) Not much of a fan of this club, too light, too little feeling at impact (too tin canny), and the spin rate was insane.

I will be looking at the 905R 7.5° w/ UST v2 65X to replace my 905S.
