Average distance with a 6 iron.

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what everybody's average distance with a 6 iron is. Been trying out different sets of irons on the launch monitor and been hitting a 6 irons 155-160yds im not a power hitter but is that average for some one that has a handicap around 15?????. Wish i could get some more distance but no matter what i try it dont work.

A consistent 160yard 6 iron isn't too bad for a 15 handicapper IMHO.

Contact's the number one factor in distance. You can swing 100 mph wiht a 6 iron, and if you can't hit ball first with a descending blow, the ball isn't going anywhere no matter what kind of equipment you have.

170-180 with a smooth swing is about where you ideally want to be IMHO. That's about how far most of the low handicaps carry their 6 irons.

Try a 5 iron.... Just kidding.

My 6 iron is about 170ish - 180 max, really depends how I'm stroking it. I try not to kill it for one thing, the other is keeping the angle till just around my right pocket (right hitter) and snap it through impact, while not trying to kill it... sounds easy doesn't it? :idhitit:

Good luck on finding your distance!

Wow i have some work to do then. Judging by what you guys are hitting a 6 iron YIKES. Oh well keep working on it i guess lol.

Don't worry so much about distance, irons are about accuracy.

The best advice you'll ever hear!

The score card doesn't care how you got there, but the number it took you to get there.

Comfortably 170-175 at sea level (Florida). My iron distances don't correspond to my driver and fairway wood distances because I have a shallow plane and don't fully compress iron shots. At my swing speed (based on what my buddies hit), I should be hitting the irons 5-10 yards further. It doesn't bother me, though, because the score is all that matters.

Yea i realize irons are about accuracy but man just frustrate's me seeing people launch irons 10-15 yards past mine. Im working on getting more accuracy with my irons its working so thats a plus but still wanna see more distance. I have a buddy that gives lessons and he wants to work on things with me cause he knows what im doing wrong so hopefully that helps.

Absolutely no disrespect here but what are you talking about?

Here is a short list of players who use the elbow plane or a.ka. shallowest plane angle on the downswing you can use:

Tiger Woods

VJ Singh

Charles Howell III

Sergio Garcia

Adam Scott

Just a short list off the top of my head...you telling me they can't compress a golf ball properly?

No disrespect taken. I'm a 5 handicap, but don't hit my irons as crisp as I do my driver or other woods / hybrid. I tend to "pick" the ball vs. taking any sort of divot. Even with a full PW, I only take a slight divot. Tiger and Vijay do have a shallow plane, but they take nice divots, hence they are compressing the ball better than I do. It works for me, but sometimes I wonder why I hit my driver and 3 wood further than someone else, and that person is a club longer than me in the irons.

I have exactly the same problem... I hit my woods pretty even with other players that I play with, but my irons are always 1 or 2 clubs shorter... As mentioned above, I think this is because of scooping (or picking) the ball rather than hitting down on it... I am trying to fix this problem with couple drills... hopefully I can hit my irons as far as others... (I hit my 6-iron 150 yd)
