Re-Shafting Irons

Is steel to graphite advisable??
Hi guys,

My current irons are Mizuno MX-17, steel, regular flex shafts.
I have owned these for about a year now and as my handicap is coming down I'm looking to treat
my self to a new set, I quite fancy the MP-60's!!!
I was wondering if it would be possible to re-shaft my MX-17's with ladies flex graphite shafts to pass
onto my girlfriend or would I be best advised to stick to steel ladies flex?? With regard to altering swing
weights / playability etc.
Is there a graphite shaft with comparable weight to a steel shaft that could be used??
I'm afraid I have very little understanding of swing weights and although I can understand that a head
designed for a steel shaft will be lighter than one designed for a graphite shaft (or so Mizuno tell me)
and how different weight shafts will affect the feel of how the club swings, I'm just not quite sure of my
options with regard to the interchangeability of the shafts!?!?

Any advise would be gratefully received.

I'm no clubmaker but generally speaking you should not reshaft steel shafted irons with graphite. There is a question about head weight in different types of clubs. You might consider using one of the lighter Nippon shafts perhaps the 850's in an A flex if it is available. You would accomplish the same thing and stay with steel.

I see no reason that you shouldn't or can't reshaft your irons with graphite. As long as you get the proper shaft tip diameter and one that is appropriate for your girlfriend. As for the Mizuno MX-17's, there are no heads for steel shafts and another one for graphite shafts. This may be the case with other brands or models but not for the MX-17's. One thing that may differ (depending on Manufacturer) from some men's clubs as opposed to their corresponding women's counterpart is that their lofts for same numbered clubs will differ because they usually have weaker lofts for womens clubs.

The other thing you may want to do is get light graphite shafts with the proper flex for your girlfriend. Bring the swing weight to what is appropriate for her. Currently, your MX-17's would have a swingweight of about D1-D2. You might want to bring this down to a C8-C9 for her. Maybe even less. It will be a whole lot more forgiving and will make her enjoy the game. I assume she is new to the game? If she is, she will be able to swing those clubs with less effort than she would a heavier swingweight. Those MX-17's are going to be a great set for her for a long time. All the way til she gets to single digit handicaps :idhitit:
