My BALL fly too high. Loose distance :( I'm sad...

Recommended Posts

Please! Please! Please! Help !!!

Why does my ball always fly high compare to others? How to keep it fly low and far? :idhitit: :D :hi:

Here's what I can tell I know and I'm doing:

- Ball position, 7 iron at center betwn my feet, then each shorter iron, I'll place another ball distance to right. each longer iron, I'll place another ball distance to left.

- My swing is pretty much like Tiger's, posture up and straigth in position, left arm straight at back-swing, shoulder turned as needed, follow through push forward finish swing, wide swing type, etc...

- Rearly have divot, 80% hit on sweet spot.

- My set of Nike Pro Combo have standard loft and length.

- Myself is 5'6" 140 lbs.

My instructor also said that my ball flys a little higher than other golfer. Sometimes wind blow at higher up in the air really kills my shot. I would really like to CURE this for years to hope I can gain distance. My ideal thought is to hit low and long.

Hasn't your instructor given you any tips/drills to lower your flight? It seems silly he'd just point out your ball flight seemed a little high.

You mentioned that your clubs were standard loft/lie...have you had them checked to verify this is correct. This may be a good starting point before you start tweaking your swing.

You also mentioned that you rarely take a divot. This leads me to believe that you're sweeping/scooping at the ball...one simple drill to to place a tee in the ground 2" in front of your ball and try to break it on your follow thru. This should result in a descending blow with a nice clean divot.

The best advise I can give you though is to continue working with an instructor. Go there with a couple things you'd like to specifically work on and then keep practicing.

Hope this is a good start.

I am not a swing coach but I have a PGA Pro I go to.

I hit the ball extremely high with ALL my clubs.

High ball flight is due to the spin you create. So he says.

My coach says it is due to my swing speed & choice of irons.

My Ping Eye2's are weaker lofts per iron than todays irons.

I have to deal with it. So when the wind is blowing I adjust & hit it lower.

I either hit the same club with an abbreviated follow thru & play the ball back a little or take a club longer & play a 3/4 swing. To keep the ball down & cheat the wind effects.

You might want to experiment with a low spin ball. I use Titleist Pro V1 because it has very low spin rate off of my long clubs but has a high spin rate with an 8 iron & on down thru my wedges - for hold on the greens. I still get burned by the wind when I do not allow for it. Look at the tops of the trees closer to the hole. If you play the same course a lot ... mark your card with the wind direction so you can refer to it on your next round. Wind, divots, spike marks, pitch marks - all part of the charm of playing this game.

I don't think you need to lower your ball flight yet.

I don't think there's such a thing as too high a ball flight IMHO. What's the downside? Long irons that stop a yard from their pitch mark? The higher you hit it, the further you're going to carry it as long as you're not scooping / adding loft.

Take a look at the guys on tour, espeically Tiger, Sergio, and Vijay. All have ridiculously high ball flights with their clubs. Until you hit it higher than them you don't need to be worrying about lowering things.

If you rarely take a divot, you're not getting the maximum potential out of your clubs. You've gotta take a divot, espeically with the mid / short irons. It doesn't need to be three inches deep, but you need to be taking some turf to compress the ball.

What's your 7 iron carry distance?

As mentioned, keep working with your instructor.

when hitting 7 iron the ball is not supposed to be in the center of your stance. place the ball way more to left heel with all your clubs, even the 9 iron should be not in center of stance. to find the right position of the ball, just let the ball in between of both feet while feet are together. then just vary the width of your stance. only when hitting pitches the ball should be in the center.

right now i am spinning back my 3 and 4 irons like 10 feet with my mp33's because i hit them so high with so much spin, so it can be a bad thing

You kind of invalidated your statement in one fell swoop there.

You have a spin issue, not a ball flight issue. . . There are lots of ways to hit the ball high with lower spin.
