A few observations on Monday at the Barclay’s:

First, it was a very quiet day. I wish I had gotten some better pictures. None of the bigger names had arrived yet. The only few recognizable names that I saw were:

Rod Pampling

Jose Maria Olazabal

Charles Howell III

Mark Hensby

Chris Dimarco

David Howell

I was told that the tournament was short on players for the pro-am, and I don’t really think any of the aforementioned players actually played in the pro-am. Aside from Chris Dimarco and David Howell (who both looked liked they’d just arrived late in the day), these guys spent most of their time on the range.

I assumed that the lack of attendance possibly had something to do with sectional qualifying for the US Open, or players just taking a day off to recharge their batteries from the Memorial. I kind of felt bad for the tournament directors but I’m sure they’ll get their money’s worth with the field they have coming.

I was observing CH III on the range for a while. He had on the harness you see in the photos with the laptop nearby. It appeared that he and his caddie went out of their way to practice at the very far end of the range, probably so as not to have to answer questions on what contraption he was using. The pictures I got were as close as I could get without being obvious. I could have gotten much closer but I knew it might make him a little uncomfortable or be a little distracting. I love gadgets as much as the next guy, but I along with all his other critics I really think he needs to simplify things and just go out and play golf…….but what do I know…

I watched JMO hit balls and it was a joy to watch. What a ball striker!! You can just about see him lick his chops before hitting every iron shot…….very impressive!

Mark Hensby was also very impressive to watch. He was, in my humble opinion, very fundamentally sound. He really seemed to enjoy what he was doing and it produced great shots. He has a very simple and effective swing.

Probably the most enjoyable part of the day was talking to Jim Sorenson of Momentus Golf. They had the orange staff bag on the range and were promoting their new product ‘The Momentus Power Hitter’. He discussed the innovation and processes in the development and also the reception he’s gotten so far from the tour players. From what I gathered, this I one of the hottest new training aids among PGA tour players right now! (Vijay, Tiger, O’Meara, Love, Quigley, Hensby, and Lehman among some of the names I could remember). From the last 4 or 5 tournaments, they’ve had to fly in additional clubs because of the strong demand.

First of all the orange head is hard not to notice on the range (which I think is pretty cool); it sort of stands out like the Nike SQ color scheme. This is a swing training driver you can actually hit balls with. Jim said that it goes about 70% as far as your normal driver distance. The one he had with him had a head weight of 310g (made of a ‘titanium matrix’) and a shaft weight of 250g. It also comes in a 270g head weight. The shaft was specially produced by True Temper and is the only steel shaft of its kind anywhere. Apparently, it’s pretty difficult to produce a steel shaft with that kind of weight.

I didn’t actually hit any balls with it but did take a few full swings! It felt pretty good………..translation: good enough for me to have an excuse to go out and get a new toy!! This one is definitely on the list! :idhitit:

I was told by Jim, when I asked, that it had just become available retail at a price point of about $150. The lefty models will also be available soon.

That’s all I got! :D

I'm sorry, but CH the 3rd looks like a weirdo wearing that harness? Is he going to swing from the nets on the range, or what? Maybe he's part of a circus act. He's also got the clown shoes to match. Gimme a break.

CHIII needs to kill it with techno crap! If I was his coach, he would only be allowed on the range to warm up. He would do NOTHING but play golf on the course for 6 months. The only thing he would be allowed to practice in repetition would be putting, chipping and maybe half wedge shots from 80 yds and in. He needs to learn to "play" golf. He has the "swing" down. I've said this before, CHIII is the Bobby Clampett of our generation..... GET OFF THE RANGE!!!!

One more question ;-):

Do you think the guys who use the Momentus do this for getting faster or just tempo and timing. I mean with a heavy you can`t hit it quick and can`t rush! Do they special exercises with it or do they only hit balls? Do they hit the balls with fullspeed (100%) and try to hit the balls as far as they can?

Thanks

The guys using the Momentus Power Hitter are using it because it puts them on the correct swing plane. With all the weight in the club, which Jim told me is balanced or evenly distributed throughout, they're basically ingraining the correct plane and muscle memory. I also think the heavier club in general helps train those muscles to fire faster when hitting a normal club. All in all the aim is to improve consistency.

Does it seem like there are more bags with country clubs stitched on them? I hadn't noticed it in some of the other picture collections.

Excellent pics.

When I saw those pics of CH3 on the range with all of the gadgets, all I could think of was the scene in Tin Cup when Costner gets the shanks and he's trying all of those contraptions in his trailer....

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
