14hcp Iron Choice

First post for me, new to the forum. I get the feeling most of the posters in the forum are better golfers, but I am looking for some input. I play to a 14.2 but i feel like a hit my irons pretty consistently. My pro is telling me that the r7 CGB MAX irons are ok to play even if you don't need a ton of help. He said that he is playing them. I am thinking about the titleist 775.cb. Anyone with experience or opinions on these irons, or other excellent suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome! :idhitit:

The R7's are a nice looking iron. I haven't ever hit the R7's, The issue I've got with them are thier lofts . . . They're almost a full club stronger than other clubs on the market. So you're essentially getting a set of 2-9. I don't know about you, but I don't want a 2 iron, and I don't want to have to buy a gap wedge. If you do decide to get them, I'd go 4-AW (you'll be getting 3-PW).

The 775's are a nice set of clubs. However, again, they're a little strong lofted (1* weaker than the R7), and for reasons I still don't understand, Titelist decided to add an extra inch length to the 3 and 4 irons making hard to hit clubs even harder to hit. Again, were I to buy them I'd go 4-AW.

If I was in your position right now, I'd take a strong look at the Mizuno MX-23, Titleist 804OS. All three have more traditional lofts, are very forgiving, set up better than the clubs you mentioned above and since they're last year's models, they're available at GREAT prices.

Hope that helps a little.

Play any iron that you like and feel comfortable playing. There is no right or wrong way to choose irons, because I as many others feel, anyone can play anything they feel comfortable with.

I was a 10 HC all of last season and played a set of 2-PW MP37 blades. Equipment or head design will not save you as many or cause you to play worse. The most important thing to fit yourself to is lie angle, and shaft flex. Other than that lesson will have a bigger impact on your game compared to equipment.

I know some will agree with me and others will not, but it really comes down to what you are comfortable playing and what works for you. TM, Nike, Titleist, Callaway, Ping, and others all claim to be improving their equipment every year, but are you really seeing the difference? Is a TM 460 TP andy better then a 905r? No, they are equaly as good, and what ever works for you is what you should get.

I honestly think you should buy your equipment based on how much you play, and how much you want to practice. If you are newer to golf, but really getting into it, and can play or proactice 4 times or more a week I would choose a club with less offset. A nice players cavity, or blade if you really want to work learn.

KZG is a good but affordable brand, or if you have the money go for an oem players cavity.

If you want to stay about the same 10 handicap, and be a recreation 20 or less rounds a year guy, I would look at the super game improvement clubs that correct any swing. Like the callaway fusion (the new ones that are super big) or maybe like a ping g2, or any croocked stick you can hit pretty good as is.

If you are playing a lot, and are planning to play a lot, choose a club that will make you do the work, that way you can learn from your mistakes, you can learn how to hit the ball in the center most of the time.

Just my thoughts, I know I will probably get flamed, but hoenstly you will notice that once you have a good swing the game improvement clubs will be harder for you to hit. I have played golf for 24 years, and I find that the more I play the less I know. Golf is still something I learn from everyday.

I'm not going to flame the previous poster, but I do disagree. Golf is a very difficult game, and you should never make it harder for yourself. Folk here and ob other sites have an obsession about playing 'tour' clubs because that is what they se pros playing.

Pros, on the other hand, will play anything that helps them score better. They use 'players' clubs because they are good enough that they can use their mishits to direct the ball. That is what the infamous phrase 'workability' means. You can deliberately mishit the ball knowing that a mishot on the toe will go left, and on the heel right.

Unless you are confident enough in your ball striking skills to be able to deliberately and repeatedly mishit an iron and still have it go where you want, I'd look for an iron that helps you hit the ball straight.

Check out the LPGA tour. Their game is about as long as a 14 handicapper's, and they use game improvement irons, mallet putters, hybrids and fairway woods.

So if you pro is happy with the TaylorMades, why do you want to make the game harder for yourself than it is for him/her? One of the more famous players on the Senior tour has said something along the lines of if he, who shoots 68, is using a hybrid, then why are you (us) still carrying 3 irons?

I've not played the Titleists you mention, but I have used their brethren and the TaylorMades. Use the TaylorMades.

I have a buddy who chooses to use blades and even persimmon woods because he thinks it will improve his game and is purer. He is off 8 and would be about 5 lower if his drives weren't shorter and less accurate, and his irons weren't also shorter, fatter and speared off in one direction or another.

If you want to get down from 14, find irons that let you hit it straight and work on your short game.

Apart from the TMs, I'd try Callaway Fusions and the original Nike Slingshots.

Cheers

Another vote for the MX-23's, my handicap is close to yours and I believe these irons offer an excellent middle ground between the super game improvement and player's irons. Prior to these I played many forgiving cast cavity backs and a few player's irons and the MX-23's are almost as forgiving as clubs like the Big Bertha's, Cobra 3100's, TM RACOS, etc., while offering the soft forged feel that most low handicappers prefer in their blades or player's cavity backs. The feel is addictive, I'm completely sold on Mizuno forgings. IMO the 23's also make it easier to hit a variety of shots than some of the real game improvement irons, maybe it's psychological beacause they have a thinner topline and look more like a player's club at address, but I also think the sole grind of the 23's makes this iron more nimble and versatile than other GI irons. If your iron play is solid and consistant you might want to try the MP-60's as well, an awesome iron IMO but a bit too demanding for my swing at present.

Go with the 775's. I am a 15 hcp and love them. They are very forgiving and still offer great feel. To me they have a great look and the offset on the 4 and 5 irons makes them easier to hit. I think this is going to be a huge hit for Titleist. Highly recommended.--Jeremy

I demoed the Titleist 775s, and they produced a nice, high ballflight and were very forgiving. The Mizuno MX-23 are also very forgiving. I am currently playing the Callaway X-18 Pro Series, and I like them as a nice combination of forgiveness without a very thick topline or huge offset.

When choosing your irons, I would go with something that can "grow" with you as you improve, and make sure you get fited for lie and shaft flex.
