can one hybrid replaces both 3i and 5wd ?

I want to ask what degree of hybrid should I get to replace 3iron/5wood.

 

I have a 3 wood in 15* and my 3i slingshot is 20*.

 

 

Any suggestion on what hybrid to get ? Which shaft is better for a hybrid steel/graphite

well, the slingshot irons are practically hybrids but if u are after replacing them just get a slingshot hybrid with 20 deg of loft

I've found the 21* CPR ironwood to be a perfect replacement for 3i and 5w yeah its not as long as a 5 wood but it gets the job done on long par 3's, and works off the tee on short par 4's. I've droped the 5 wood so that I can carry both the 21 and 24 because I just don't see much advantage to carrying a 5 wood unless there's going to be a Par 3 thats over 220 yards

Would it matter if ever i go for 20* hybrid it would be the same loft as my 3i ?

Hybrids really aren't easy to just swap loft for loft with an iron. Hybrids typically have longer shafts and of course the face is a high-rebound steel, so they tend to be a bit hotter/longer than irons for these reasons. It really takes a demo to see which loft gives you the distance you're after along with the shot height you desire.

Making a VERY general statement though, I have carried a 19º or 20º hybrid for 3 seasons now as a 5 wood/ 3 iron replacement and it has worked well. But, I have hit different brands of hybrids in the same lofts, and each had their own unique shot characteristics and overall distances.

Try a 19 degree Sonartec MD w/ I-Rod shaft. Distance will be longer than your 3-iron but slightly shorter than a 5-wood. However, it will allow you more consistent distance control than a 3-iron or 5-wood.

I have 4i (24°), hybrid 4 (22°), 5w and 3w. I don't know what loft my woods have ... but my hybrid replaces the 3i I hit before. For long Par 3, I hit 4i because I found that hybrid have high trajectory ... maybe, I have to work ... I use the hybrid only for long shot from rough.

 

I'm wondering if should use hybrid 3 (19°) instead ...

I'll bring my 3wd and 3i in the golfshop when i go and look for a hybrid so i can see what yardage in 19* hybrid i would need.

 

 

Would a steel shaft be better in a hybrid so it would feel more like an iron ?

IMHO I would go with graphite shaft in a hybrid for increased launch angle and distance.

My Adams Idea 3 I-wood (read hybrid) is stronger lofted at 17 degrees, but the clublength is just +/- .5 inch longer than the three iron it replaced. After hitting it a while, I noticed I wasn't pulling my 5 wood as often and dropped it from the bag. I don't miss it at all. Bonus...the original Ideas are on closeout all over the place and you can get them for a song.

yep.....i have a 22 deg tour rescue.....it fits the bill perfectly....if i ease up on it, it is a long 3 iron, if i step on it, it doubles easily as a 5 wd and it works great out of med rough as well as a tee....i also have a 19 deg rescue which i use as a 2 iron replacement, 4 wood replacement......

I would recommend going with a 15 or 16 degree 3 wood and then a 19 degree hybrid. If you have too large a yardage gap between the hybrid and 4 iron you can bend your 4 iron a degree or two strong. You can easily fine tune control the yardage of any 19 to 21 degree by varying the length of the shaft as well. Most importantly find one that you can control and get the yardage you are seeking.

In that slot, I either carry a 20* iron-like hybrid (mine is the old Cobra MultiMetal Baffler) or a 21* 7 Wood. Both of them are middle clubs in between the 5W and the 3i, and I choose depending on whether my swing is working better for irons or for woods at that time.

 

Just to be clear, a 21* 7 Wood is longer for me than a 20* 3 iron (non-hybrid) because of the length of the shaft and the higher trajectory.
