2 Iron or Hybrid?

Recommended Posts

Looking to fill a gap between my 15* fairway wood and my 3 iron. Wondering what people recommend, 2 iron or 2 hybrid. Also, whichever you recommend, which specific club would you recommend. For example, if you recommend a 2 iron, which 2 iron (Titleist 735, 695, mizuno mp-60).

I play Titleist 695 CB and was considering a 2 iron in the 695 or the titleist hybrid, although i have heard some bad reviews for teh titleist hybrid.

I'm in a similar situation. I'm going to pick up a 735 2 iron to match my 735's. I don't like hybrids, because I hook them all due to too much offset and odd shaft combos. I like the Titleist hybrid because of it's iron like style, although it has a bit much offset. :idhitit:

I use the Bridgestone Airmuscle and like it a lot. It is forged and has very very little offset. I tried the Titleist 503H and absolutely hated the thing. The sweetspot was non-existant and the offset made it a snap hooking machine. If you go the iron route, I noticed on Golf Digest's web site that both DL III and Adam Scott are using the 735 CM 2 iron. Scott may be using the 695 CB 2 iron now that I think about it.

If you are using the 695 CBs, I would stay away from the 2 iron just because it has 17' of loft. Your 3 iron should do the trick, since it is really a "2 iron" already. I would go with a 5 wood, or wait for the Titleist 585 to be released. The 503 isn't very good, who ever told you that was right, IMHO.

I'm actaully thinking I might drop my 3 iron even for a 22' hybrid, if the 585 is offered in that loft. The 5 wood has been my money club the last few weeks and has earned me 2 eagles, so I vote 5 wood.

PS - If you ever want to sell your 695 CB 3,4,5 iron let me know.

I'm in the same situation. You might look into the Bridgestones...very little offset. I have one that I absolutely cannot hook without totally smothering it. Its known ball flight is nice on short, tight par 4s. I put it in the bag for courses that have several of those tee shots.

the titleist 503.h is a bad club, save yourself a hundred+ bucks and don't go that route. just like t8er, above, I tried it for a few months and could never hit it consistently. it was the only club in my bag with significant offset, making it a hook machine...and it has a smallish sweetspot (despite the huge hollow head). it's now leaning up against the same wall as my old set of irons (benched).

still, I prefer an iron-like hybrid with reduced offset....and was starting to look for a Bridgestone Airmuscle utility iron when I found a used Callaway X-tour 2-iron at Golfsmith. It happened to be set up to the same specs as my irons, and I took that as an omen.

Thus far, I am very impressed. I've been playing golf for about 15 years, am now playing to a 4 handicap, and have NEVER been able to hit a 2 iron well. But this thing, compared to my Titleist blades, is a hybrid. I was thinking of getting a set of x-tours in a year or two: for a clunky cavity back, I really like the aesthetic (Buckeye's colors too)...now that I know I can hit the matching 2-iron, the X-tours are definitely on my short list.

if you're like me and prefer an iron-like hybrid: take a look at the Bridgestone Airmuscle utility iron (probably your best bet), the X-tour 2-iron...or if you can get your hands on one: 503.h tour (reduced offset, JHR was selling one for ~200) or 503i. if you like a more "woody" hybrid, I'd wait a few months for the Titleist hybrid to be released.

Actually, I've never been able to consistently hit a 2-iron before (as I pointed out). I have a pretty steep swing, and sometimes struggle hitting fairway woods off the deck. That's why I prefer an iron-like hybrid. So here is my Titleist 670, the x-tour, and the Titleist 503.h hybrid. Can you see how the X-tour 2-iron might feel like a hybrid-iron to me?

I prefer to play with a 2 iron over a hybrid, but just because i am comfortable doing so.

But i have lately been experimenting with the hybrids and they are so much easier to use than a 2 iron, it is hard to not want to use them.

I will still keep using the 2 iron when i am at a course that i must me in the fairway, but when i can use the hybrid, i will to try to capture some of that comfort.

You look at the number of Tour players that still use a 2 iron, it is very few, that could be marketing or there really could be something to the whole hybrid hype. Good luck with your choice.
