Best course you've ever played?

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty new here, but thought this might be an interesting topic.

For me, it's the Ocean Course at Kiawah. The course hosted the Ryder Cup in 1991 and will host the 2007 Senior PGA and the 2012 PGA. By far the most unique golf course I've ever played and definately the toughest. I played 3 of Kiawahs other golf courses the same week, but nothing compared to The Ocean Course. You feel like you're in the middle of no-where (I guess you're actually on the edge of no-where since it fronts the Atlantic Ocean).

Got stuck playing with myself and decided to play the tips. May sound normal to most of you, but I'm a 12 handicapper and the starter advised against doing this. Anyway, played with the wind the first 4 holes and made 3 pars and a birdie. Then played the next 9 holes directly into a constant 25-35 mph wind that gusted even stronger. Was hitting driver/3 wood on par fours and not even getting close (and I'm a fairly long hitter).

The scorecard only listed the golf tees and gave a distance of around 7,300 yards. Upon finishing, I talked to one of the pro's and mentioned how long the course felt in relation to the scorecard. He then questioned whether I'd played the gold tees or the back tees. I didn't think there was a difference. He then mentioned that several of the holes have a black tee instead of a gold. Well, I had played the first tee-box I had come too and didn't really pay attention to colors, but did remember a few tees being black. I was then informed that from the absolute tips, this course measured around 7,950 yards and could be stretched over 8,000!

It did make me feel better about my 91 and my distance that day. I hadn't shot over 82 on any of their other courses.

Anyway, I love hearing about courses all over the place and look for them when I travel. Don't really care if they are famous or not, but whether or not someone enjoyed their experience.

Cypress! Thanks to LarryPro!

We had a great day. The golf course was amazing and it was even better that I got to share it with a few good buddies.

The funny part about that day was my caddy. He spent the entire afternoon telling us about how he caddied for tiger when he played there last time. He told us where he hit it off every tee, where he hit it too, etc... By the 5th ot 6th hole we were all going crazy. "Damnit, F-tiger... Where the hell am I, a normal human, supposed to hit it?"

Of all the Top 100 courses that I have played (which is about 45 of them), to me, there are 3 that stand out above the rest.

1. Royal Melbourne

2. Prairie Dunes

3. Seminole

I wish I could play all three everyday...

45 is a heck of a number. I'm only at 3, but should get two more before the end of the year with Prairie Dunes being one of them.

I consider myself very lucky...

I've played enough of them to satisfy my "Top 100" hunger...

If I get to play more, great. If not, that's ok, too...

By the way, you are gonna LOVE Prairie Dunes. And like th4par said above, Oak Tree is without a doubt one of the top 3 hardest...

Pine Valley...ah, the benefits of being a caddie there.

Seconded. I can't imagine anywhere could be better than here. It was 8 years ago I played it and I can remember the whole thing like it was yesterday.

I've heard alot of great things about Oak Tree and have seen it, but haven't played it. Used to be a group of guys from my club that put together road trips where they'd go play Oak Tree, Southern Hills, and Prairie Dunes but I haven't heard of one recently. I may have to revive that old trip one of these years.

I went up to the Open at Southern Hills, but haven't played there yet either, but plan to do so in the next few years.

I haven't done anything great so far, but this summer should be a treat. Probably playing Bethpage Black and Shinnecock (a friend has a connection there) and then I'm headed up to the UP to pick up my wife and will stop to play Arcadia Bluffs so I'll let you know then!

Newport Country Club, played it via work. My company has some what of a corporate agreement there, and we were supposed to have customers come. Well, the customers couldn't make it, and my two co workers gave me the call!

Awesome place. Unfortunately it was a scramble, I would have loved to see what I could put together there! Most memorable moment, the head of golf explaining to everyone that they don't normally have carts, they had to rent them, and then to keep them in the fairway when not on a path, due to the native grasses...

Almost feel guilty since I'm the one who originated this thread, but I should have mentioned my home course: Colonial Country Club, Hogan's Alley.

I guess when I made the original post, I was thinking of places I've been and not the course I've played all my life.

It's a great old traditional course that was the first course south of the Mason-Dixon Line to host a US Open. We've also hosted a Players Championship and a Women US Open. Of course, we're also the longest running venue on the PGA Tour having hosted our annual tournament since 1946 (other tournaments are older, but haven't stayed at the same courses).

I've been very fortunate to play this golf course for a majority of my life. That said, I still like going to other courses around the world and hope to do a great deal of that in my lifetime.

Thanks for all the responses so far as I am enjoying the reading.

I don't get out to the nicest courses in the world. But I'm trying to expand my horizons...So far Golf Digest's rankings haven't let me down:

Old Stonewall (Golf Digest #1 public in PA)

Stonewater (Golf Digest #1 public in OH)

But my favorite course (due to one summer full of golf): Ohio State Scarlet. The more I played that course the more I loved it. At the time, it was probably the first course I had ever played that was really a "designed" course. It got me hooked. Mr. MacKenzie was good.

Perhaps I'll have to go back to OSU for an MBA or something...as Mr. Nicklaus just re-vamped it.
